Job description

At North Vancouver District Public Library, we inspire learning, discovery, creativity and collaboration in our community. Position Overview NVDPL is looking for a regular full-time Library Technician to work in a front-facing role with an emphasis on services and programming for children and families. Reporting to the Manager, Community Connections, and under the direction of a Librarian, you will provide reference & reader’s advisory services; plan and delivery early literacy programming and outreach; and assist with collection maintenance.

What you’ll be doing

Aspects of the role will include :

  • Providing reference and readers advisory services with a focus on youth
  • Providing assistance with digital devices & resources and using library equipment
  • Confidently managing use of public space in a busy environment
  • Planning and delivering early literacy storytimes appropriate for various ages and stages of development
  • Conducting group visits in the library and outreach to daycares, schools and other community groups
  • Assisting in collection maintenance, including assessing and weeding collections using established criteria
  • Referring more complex inquiries to librarian

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Completion of an accredited Library and Information Technology program
  • Demonstrated ability / experience and desire to work with youth
  • Ability to design and implement age & developmentally appropriate programs and activities for youth
  • Considerable customer service, interpersonal, communication and written skills

It’s great if you have

  • Basic knowledge of library collections, especially current trends, formats, genres and authors for youth.
  • Basic knowledge of the information resources, electronic networks and computer applications used in the work, including library service platforms
  • Basic knowledge of the objectives of public libraries, including an understanding of Intellectual Freedom

The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at based on a 35-hour Sunday to Thursday workweek, plus a generous benefits package. This work requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekend shifts.
