These positions are based at our Carnegie Branch, located inside the Carnegie Community Centre at 401 Main Street, Downtown Eastside.

About the Job

Library Public Service Assistant IIs (LPSA II) staff the service desks, checking in and out items, assisting patrons with VPL’s website and apps, and answering questions in a friendly, welcoming manner. They provide basic reader’s advisory by referencing the collection and assist with the use of computers and printers.

LPSA IIs also provide guidance to clerical staff, especially in the absence of a supervisor, and are responsible for scheduling and tracking staff hours to ensure payroll accuracy.

We serve a community from all walks of life, offering friendly, respectful, and responsive service regardless of background or income. A genuine desire to help people is a key asset.

Additional duties include sorting and shelving resources, requiring physical activity such as lifting, reaching, bending, and standing for long periods. You will be part of a system circulating over 5 million items annually.

LPSA IIs also support our public creative programs.

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of Twelfth grade, supplemented by relevant commercial or library technician courses.
  • Considerable related library experience (1 year).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent customer service skills, patience, warmth, curiosity, diplomacy, tact, and empathy, especially in conflict de-escalation.
  • Physical ability to handle books and materials, including lifting and moving large volumes.
  • Knowledge of library objectives, organization, procedures, and resources; experience with library software is an asset.
  • Openness to new work procedures and adaptability to change.
  • Comfort with technology, multitasking in a fast-paced environment, and learning new applications.
  • Strong team-building and leadership skills for guiding clerical staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, flexibility, and clarity in interactions.
  • Organizational skills, punctuality, and pride in quality work.
