There's no job like working in a courthouse library - courthouse library staff are called upon to do dozens of different things every day, from frontline duties to high-level legal research, and in this role, you'll experience the whole gamut, developing many new skills that will serve you for a lifetime.

Our new library assistant will be responsible primarily for frontline library duties - helping lawyers to access legal information by processing new books, helping with circulation, performing our annual inventory, and managing the collection. There are also frequently special projects that you’ll be able to help with.

  • 15 hours per week - flexible schedule
  • starting wage $19.50 / hr with annual cost of living increases
  • strong health, dental and drug benefits plan (after three months)
  • membership in the Ontario Courthouse Libraries Association, which provides networking opportunities with library leaders from across the province
  • delivering excellent customer service to our patrons and external stakeholders
  • providing coverage when other staff is out of office
  • troubleshooting library technology (PCs, photocopier, iPad)
  • performing basic office duties, including helping with directional questions, maintaining office supplies and our kitchenette and lawyers’ lounge
  • supporting our circulation, processing, inventory, and collection management functions

Circulation : keeping track of what books have been signed out from the library, and following up with lawyers as necessary to request their return.

Processing : when we acquire new books, performing copy cataloguing and printing and affixing spine labels. Filing looseleaf updates.

Inventory : cross-checking our holdings with a shelf list to see if anything has gone missing

Collection management : reshelving items, shelf-reading

  • recommending process improvements and generating new ideas for patron engagement
  • supporting our other staff in duties including legal research and reference services, board / committee work, and law association work such as managing membership renewals
  • special projects as assigned depending on your interests and our needs

Traits we're looking for :

  • customer service excellence - when a patron needs help, you find a way to get it done.
  • punctuality, reliability, strong attention to detail and diligence
  • discretion, tact, and professionalism - working with lawyers, our library staff hear a lot of sensitive information and have to handle interpersonal situations diplomatically and with care
  • able to work well with a broad variety of personality types who have differing needs and communication styles

Qualifications :

No formal qualifications are required; preference will be given to candidates with some work experience in a library, a library technician diploma or equivalent, and / or customer service experience. Academic research shows that sometimes, people from marginalized communities will self-select out of applying for jobs if they feel underqualified. If you want to work here but aren’t sure if you meet the qualifications, please apply.
