POSITION SUMMARY :

The Health Sciences Library and Archives Technician supports the hospital’s evidence-based decision-making and ensures the smooth operation of the Holland Bloorview Health Sciences Library and Archives. This role includes assisting the Manager, Library and Archives in accessing, organizing, and managing health and clinical information resources to meet the needs of clients, clinicians, researchers, and learners. The technician also helps care for, preserve, and organize the library’s book and journal collections, along with archival materials related to pediatric health and the hospital’s history. Key responsibilities include : cataloguing, indexing, and classification of library and archival collections, overseeing circulation and interlibrary loans, providing reference support, contributing to collection development, collaborating on assigned projects with other hospitalprograms and offering technical support and accessible services to users.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Library :

  • Performs all aspects of cataloguing, indexing and classification duties
  • Assists in maintaining and updating book, journals and archives collections
  • Performs shelving and circulation duties
  • Processes interlibrary loan requests and document delivery
  • Provides reference assistance in the use of electronic and print resources to all library users (by phone, email)
  • Guides stakeholders in accessing health sciences resources, research tools and retrieves scholarly articles
  • Assists in generating statistical records
  • Performs troubleshooting (media equipment, computers, printers, multi-functional devices) and acts as a liaison with Information Services
  • Performs additional duties in supporting special projects as assigned by Manager to support Holland Bloorview education, research and clinical mandate
  • Promotes library services and resources across the hospital
  • Provides general administrative duties to support the running of the virtual and physical library space
  • Supports the library / archives operations in Manager’s absence
  • Provides training and placement support to library technician students, as applicable
  • Actively participates at Health Science Information Consortium
  • Collaborates with and supports all hospital colleagues, stakeholders and hospital’s programs

Archives :

  • Provides proper handling, care and storage of all archival materials
  • Assists with collection coordination, preservation, maintenance, retrieval and organization of information using archival cataloguing software
  • Assists with digitization, reproduction and retrieval of archival materials
  • Supports the preservation and conservation of sensitive archival materials, adhering to archival standards and best practices

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary library technician diploma required (including archival course preferred)
  • Knowledge of cataloguing and classification – technical skills (AACR2, MARC21, RDA format, NLM subject headings)
  • Experience working with DOCLINE and ALMA
  • Experienced in the use of MS Office and Office 365
  • Exceptional customer care services skills (ability to respond promptly, accurately and / or conduct appropriate referrals)
  • Outstanding collaboration skills to partner with other hospital’s programs and promote library services and resources
  • Detail-oriented, good time management skills, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to accomplish work objectives
  • Experience working in health care settings (preferred) and strong interest working in a diverse health care setting
  • Ability to work independently as well as an effective team member
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge about current medical librarianship trends

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS :

  • Regular standing and sitting
  • Using step stools / step ladders / book carts to (re-)shelve books / journals and archival material
  • Required to move, position, place and remove boxes weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Some lifting of light furniture and equipment in the library / archives
