Job summary

The Ontario NDP Caucus is seeking a Legislative Assistant to support MPP Chris Glover in the Spadina-Fort York office at Queen’s Park. This temporary, full-time role covers 32 hours per week and focuses on constituent contact, case work, and research to aid legislative duties.

You will handle correspondence, track legislation, and prepare briefs while coordinating with government officials, stakeholders, and the public.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Contact constituents and the general public by telephone, writing, and in person.
  • Address enquiries and case work referred from the constituency office or Queen’s Park.
  • Coordinate with senior government personnel, external organizations, media, and local government.
  • Administer MPP Chris Glover’s Queen’s Park office and correspondence.
  • Track legislation and proceedings in the legislature.
  • Perform specialized research to support legislative duties.
  • deputize for the Member at hearings when required.

Job description

Job: Legislative Assistant

Status: Temporary (2 Months), Full-time (32 hours/week)

Department/Location: MPP Chris Glover, Spadina-Fort York (Queen’s Park)

Salary: $78,801.66/year

Objectives: To assist the MPP with their political and legislative duties.

Responsible to the Member for:

Public Relations
  • Contacting Constituents and general public, by telephone, writing and in person.
  • Dealing with enquiries and solving problems ("case work") which come directly to Queen's Park, or which have to be referred from the constituency office for follow up.
  • Contacting senior government personnel, professional people, officials from outside organizations, local government, the media, etc.
Administration
  • Administering Member's office at Queen's Park and correspondence emanating from that office
Advisory/Research Duties
  • Keeping track of legislation and proceedings of legislature
  • Keeping informed of NDP policy and the Caucus' position of topics of current interest, and concern.
  • Performing specialized research
  • Making enquiries and collecting information in connection with Member's legislative responsibilities and particular community interest and problems.
  • Deputizing as required for Member at appeal hearings (WSIB, EI, etc.), at meetings which he or she is unable to attend (take notes or participate).
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge appropriate to the position of the NDP and/or Canadian Labour movement and of the Ontario Government and public affairs
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Equity and Diversity frameworks and considerations and as it applies to the duties of the position
  • Demonstrated knowledge, familiarity and understanding of the riding and MPPs critic portfolio
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing French
  • Ability to work with the public and stakeholders
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to do general research.
  • Experience in the Labour movement or NDP organization and election campaigns would be an asset.
