Reporting to the Director, Assistant General Counsel, you will have a broad range of responsibilities in providing legal guidance in relation to consumer protection, marketing, customer acquisitions, loss mitigation, fraud, AML matters, as well as generally supporting the legal advice needs of the Canadian business. You will partner closely with business teams and stakeholders to support initiatives to provide practical and timely advice to ensure our operations are well managed. You will have the opportunity to be innovative while ensuring that we manage risk to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support business partners and stakeholders with legal advice in relation to consumer protection, marketing, customer acquisitions, loss mitigation, fraud, AML matters within the context of Capital One (Canada Branch)’s credit card business as a federally regulated bank.
  2. Conduct legal research and translate legal advice into practical business terms.
  3. Advise on new and upcoming legislation, and regulatory expectations and participate in external forums to include the Canadian Bankers Association, as necessary.
  4. Develop legal guidance and other tools to support business partners to operate in complex legal spaces.
  5. Participate in cross-functional teams to address special projects, such as implementation of legislation, new products, and risk management.
  6. Perform other responsibilities as requested.

For this role you will have:

  1. A law degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited law school and license to practice in Ontario.
  2. 7+ years relevant experience to be able to execute on the responsibilities set out above, gained within the financial service industry whether in private practice, in-house or government.
  3. Knowledge of the business and regulatory environment in which Capital One (Canada Branch) operates would be an asset.
  4. Strong legal research ability, together with effective communication and writing skills to be able to provide clear advice both verbally and in writing.
  5. Fluency translating legal advice into actionable guidance for business teams.
  6. Ability to manage a large volume of work, including complex legal issues with minimal supervision.
  7. Ability and willingness to work as a team player, and comfort interacting with associates across various departments and job levels.
