Job description

Legal Counsel I is a complex and responsible position whose primary function is to provide crucial support to our Senior Legal Counsel, assisting with case preparation, and conducting legal research. This position will work closely with Senior Legal Counsel who can mentor and develop this position. This position reports to the Director, Member Services.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Senior Legal Counsel with case management and preparation, including preparing files for sending to external counsel, and interviewing witnesses.
  • Conduct detailed legal research and analysis to identify potential case outcomes. This includes reviewing file that have been referred to arbitration for disclosure to facilitate settlements in advance of hearing dates.
  • Prepare legal documents and briefs for the Manitoba Labour Board as well as contracts and agreements.
  • Provide legal opinions to the Union on matters pertaining to grievance arbitrations, Labour Board matters, and collective bargaining matters, including strikes.
  • Provide technical legal advice to other staff on grievance and arbitration matters.
  • Sit as a member of the Union’s Screening Committee and write to MGEU members regarding the Committees’ determinations.
  • Represent the Screening Committee to the Union's Grievance and Appeals Committee, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB or JD) and Call to the Bar in Manitoba, with current license to practice in Manitoba.
  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of law, awards, and legislation.
  • Able to analyze and identify grievance file issues.
  • Able to express principles, analyze awards and judgements, and make recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organization skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends when required.
  • Understanding of the goals and values of the labour movement.
  • Ability to travel from time to time.
