Job description

About This Employment Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team and support the CCHPBC’s regulatory and public protection mandate. In this role, you will provide legal advice and guidance on complex inquiry, discipline, and unauthorized practice matters. You will also be responsible for preparing submissions and acting as counsel in Health Professions Review Board applications.

This opportunity offers a dynamic role where you will work closely with the Registrar and Inquiry Committee, delivering legal analysis, drafting decisions, and helping shape CCHPBC’s regulatory processes. Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

  1. Provides legal analysis and advice on inquiry, discipline, and unauthorized practice files, including investigative strategy, outcomes, extraordinary action, discipline proceedings, and consent resolutions, from a risk-based and trauma-informed perspective.
  2. Supervises paralegals and legal assistants supporting unauthorized practice, inquiry, and discipline functions.
  3. Evaluates the disposition of complaints by the Registrar, preparing legal analysis and reports for the Registrar and Inquiry Committee.
  4. Researches and provides legal advice to the Inquiry Committee, including advice on dispositions, sanctions, and complex inquiry files.
  5. Drafts decisions of the Inquiry Committee and agreements, as well as decision letters for dispositions.
  6. Acts as counsel for the College on Health Professions Review Board applications.
  7. Provides legal training and information to staff and committee members.
  8. Reviews bylaws, policies, and procedures to ensure legal compliance, including with the upcoming Health Professions and Occupations Act.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Inquiry and Discipline.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Practicing lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or eligible for membership within a specified period.
  • Three (3) years of administrative law experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience in a professional regulatory or government organization or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Health Professions Act, upcoming Health Professions and Occupations Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and other statutes impacting the organization.
  • Ability to provide pragmatic, risk-based legal opinions and advice.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative spirit with a passion for regulatory excellence.

An individual meeting either formal qualifications or accepted equivalency will be considered.

Compensation and Perks

The salary range is $127,125 to $137,000 annually, based on a 37.5-hour work week. The starting salary will be determined by knowledge, skills, experience, peer salaries, market conditions, and other relevant factors.
