Job summary

Couche‑Tard/Circle K in Laval, QC is seeking a Legal Counsel to support civil and commercial law mandates, provide opinions, and ensure legal compliance across business units.

The role reports to the Director of Legal Affairs and requires a Quebec Bar member with 3+ years of relevant experience, bilingual in French and English, and the ability to manage multiple files in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in law and active membership in the Quebec Bar.
• Minimum of 3 years of civil and commercial law experience.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage several concurrent files.

Responsibilities

Legal Counsel

Department: Legal Affairs, Canada

Location: On site, Laval, QC (4204 boulevard Industriel, H7L 0E3)

Type of employment: Temporary – Maternity Leave Replacement, Full Time (40 hours)

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director of Legal Affairs, as part of the Canadian legal team, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for civil and commercial law mandates, including research, legislative, jurisprudential and doctrinal analyses, and legal opinions, in civil and commercial law.

What You’ll Do

• Meet with internal clients and analyze their needs;
• Prepare and provide legal opinions mainly in civil and commercial law;
• Research, analyze and interpret legislative standards applicable to identified issues;
• Provide legal opinions and practical solutions to the various business units;
• Work in partnership with the various business units, particularly in identifying strategies and desired objectives in the preparation of files;
• Develop solutions to legal issues raised by business unit employees, and provide the necessary support to implement these solutions;
• Ensure that the company’s regular activities are carried out in compliance with laws, corporate policies and sound governance and business practices;
• Advise business units on legislative changes in the industry;
• Maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge in areas of law relevant to practice;
• Occasional interaction with external lawyers, consultants, professionals and suppliers;
• Follow‑up on various files submitted for analysis and recommendations; and
• Perform all related functions associated with the profession.

What You’ll Need

Education

• Bachelor's degree in law;
• Member in good standing of the Quebec Bar;

Experience

• At least three (3) years of relevant experience in civil and commercial law, in a company or law firm;

Knowledge and skills

• Ability to work under pressure and manage several concurrent files within established deadlines;
• Ability to analyze and synthesize, and communicate legal concepts in simple terms;
• Ability to organize work and manage priorities;
• Ability to work as part of a team;
• Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment.

Language Skills

• Bilingualism required (Advanced French and English) both spoken and written, as the person will be required to work and communicate regularly in English while performing the tasks outlined above. Specifically, the role requires collaboration with global teams.
