Job summary

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is seeking a Legal Coordinator to manage legal matters and provide essential support across various departments. This permanent, full-time position requires strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, as well as a post-secondary diploma in law or paralegal studies. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of relevant experience and a working knowledge of municipal legislation.

The Legal Coordinator, under the direction of the Associate Director, Office of the CAO, will primarily be responsible for coordinating legal matters for the Town by working closely with external legal counsel and internal departments. The Law Clerk provides professional legal support with a focus on planning, real estate, procurement, and corporate matters. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality, sound judgment, and independence, and plays a vital role in promoting legal compliance and operational efficiency across the organization. This role does not provide legal advice.

The Successful Candidate Will Have

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Law Clerk or Paralegal program.
  • Minimum of Three (3) years of progressive experience in a legal office, preferably in a municipal environment or public sector setting.
  • Membership with the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Municipal Act, Planning Act, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), and Real Property Limitations Act.
  • Experience with land registry systems and legal software is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and drafting skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a political and public-facing environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to anticipate and work towards deadlines.
