Job summary

Pomerleau is seeking a Legal Counsel to join the Operational Support team in Vancouver. You will provide strategic legal advice on business and commercial law matters for major projects across Western Canada, ranging from $1.5 million to over $1 billion.

You will draft and negotiate contracts, advise project teams, and maintain corporate documents, while collaborating with external counsel. A strong background in construction law and PPP contracts is highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Must have LL.B. or J.D. and be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia (NL or other BC membership an asset).
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in construction and/or commercial law.
  • Experience with Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements and CCDC contracts is a plus.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and advisory capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple files and work under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and negotiate construction contracts, subcontracts, service agreements, and other commercial contracts.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to project teams on a range of matters in Western Canada.
  • Maintain and update contract templates and corporate documents for the company and subsidiaries.
  • Review bid documents for private/public procurement, including alternative delivery models.
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel and support day-to-day operations across projects.

As Legal Counsel within Pomerleau’s Operational Support team in Vancouver, you will play a critical role in the company’s continued success in Western Canada by providing strategic legal advice on business and commercial law matters. Supporting major construction projects ranging from $1.5 million to over $1 billion, you will serve as a trusted legal expert, providing guidance and support for the company’s day-to-day business activities and operations across Pomerleau and its subsidiaries.

What you will do
  • Prepare, review, analyze, draft comments on, and negotiate various types of agreements, including construction contracts, subcontracts, service agreements, consultant/design and other commercial contracts;
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to project teams on a wide range of legal matters, including support of ongoing projects in the region;
  • Maintain and update the company’s and its subsidiaries’ contract templates and certain corporate documents;
  • Review, analyze, and comment on bid documents for private and public procurement processes, including alternative delivery project models;
  • Respond to legal inquiries and provide support and guidance to employees involved in the company’s operations across its various projects;
  • Coordinate and collaborate with external legal counsel;
  • Perform any other related duties in support of the operations of the company and its subsidiaries.
This role could be for you if you have
  • MUST have Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. or J.D.) and membership in the Law Society of British Columbia (membership in the law society of another Canadian province will be considered an asset);
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in construction law and/or commercial law;
  • Relevant experience with Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements and CCDC contracts (considered a significant asset);
  • Practical knowledge of the construction industry;
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills;
  • Strong legal drafting, analytical, and advocacy skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong knowledge of computer applications and software relevant to the role;
  • Demonstrated judgment, initiative, leadership, autonomy, versatility, and team-oriented mindset;
  • Strong analytical and solution-oriented approach;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple files and priorities simultaneously;
  • Significant people management experience (an asset)
