Lecturer and Clinic Coordinator
Full Time: 1.0 FTE (5 days per week)
Starting salary is $ 100,000 and may be negotiated based on experience and credentials.
The Dental Hygiene Degree Program (DHDP) in the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada, invites applications for a Lecturer and Clinic Coordinator position. Outlined by UBC’s Faculty Association, this is a teaching-intensive position. Lecturers are expected to participate fully in the affairs of their department and undertake related service assignments.
The successful applicant will instruct in credit courses and clinics in the DHDP and provide instruction and oversight to undergraduate students in all learning environments. They will collaborate with the following: DHDP Co-Directors, Department Head, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, and other DHDP course coordinators.
Teaching and oversight responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
– Instructs in the classroom and online learning environments:
1. Plans and presents lectures/seminars in the following areas: process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning), periodontology, dental anatomy, radiology, oral self-care, instrumentation principles, literature review/academic writing
2. Develops appropriate formative and summative assessments
3. Assigns grades and meets with students to review
4. Assists with recruitment and coordination of other course instructors
5. Collaborates with the Centre for Teaching, Learning, & Technology for online course(s)
6. Attends program curriculum and academic progress meetings
7. Liaises with faculty members in other programs
– Instructs and assesses client care activities in the clinic and/or community settings:
1. Guides students in simulation exercises
2. Guides students while formulating diagnosis and treatment care plans
3. Supervises students while performing dental hygiene treatment
4. Performs treatment when student intervention is required
5. Oversees clinical outreach events
6. Oversee the didactic and clinical radiology curriculum.
7. Oversees and participates in calibration activities
8. Assesses students for professionalism, knowledge integration, and clinical skills
9. Supports and monitors student practice management using AxiUm for all years, including patient allocation, chart audits, client satisfaction surveys and coordination of clinic related assignments.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the academic life and teach/supervise learners in the Faculty of Dentistry. They will be an innovative teacher who will integrate technologies and new approaches to learning into the DHDP curriculum.
The successful individual must have:
- Significant curriculum management experience in a college or university setting
- Experience coordinating a team of people in academic and clinical settings
- Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills, be able to work effectively and contribute within a team environment, and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of stakeholders
- Demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching
- A Master’s degree in Dental/Craniofacial Science, Dental Hygiene, Education, or related area
- At least 5 years of dental hygiene practice and teaching experience in a college or university setting
The applicant must be a Dental Hygiene Practitioner with local anesthesia certification and licensed (or eligible) with the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals. Salary is subject to standards within the Faculty of Dentistry based on appointment status.
