Job summary

A Calgary-based educational institution is seeking a Learning Commons Librarian to facilitate access to learning resources and promote library programming. The ideal candidate has knowledge of library practices, experience in educational settings, and excellent interpersonal skills. This position requires a High School Diploma or Library Technician Certificate depending on category. Salary ranges from $23.45 to $32.62 per hour.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and general knowledge of library procedures.
  • Two years’ learning commons experience in a school setting (Category 6).
  • Library Technician Certificate and one year of experience in a school setting (Category 11).
  • Familiarity with automated library systems preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic search techniques and information technologies.

  • Collaborates with staff to maintain a learner-centered space.
  • Ensures resources reflect school priorities.

Overview

St. James School — 58 Avenue SW, Calgary

Salary: 23.45 - 28.04 per hour (Category 6); 26.92 - 32.62 per hour (Category 11)

Responsibilities
  • The Learning Commons Librarian (LCL) facilitates presentations and tutorials on access to traditional and digital learning resources for students and staff.
  • The LCL collaborates with the Learning Commons Team, comprised of designated teachers, support staff and administration, in building and maintaining the Learning Commons as an inclusive, flexible, learner-centered, physical and virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play, while keeping a positive and inviting learning environment.
  • The LCL ensures the Learning Commons is reflective of school and district priorities.
  • Provides efficient and timely cataloguing of resources, as well as maintains the Learning Commons (LC) collection through standard cataloguing practices and systems
  • Provides efficient and timely organization, circulation and maintenance of LC resources
  • Provides a combination of LC programming such as orientation, storytelling, book talks, book fairs, Makerspace challenges, educational technology and promoting the use of digital resources
  • Promotes the LC programming by collaborating with teachers and staff
  • Acts as the liaison between the school and Instructional Media Centre by training staff to book resources independently
  • Attends District and other Professional Development to ensure their LC programming is current and reflective of Calgary Catholic’s LC philosophy
  • Models and facilitates strategies for locating, accessing and evaluating resources for staff and students; in particular, Catholic resources
  • Prominently displays Catholic resources during liturgical seasons such as Advent and Lent or at the request of school administration; including resources and support from Instructional Services and the Instructional Media Centre
  • Builds and maintains Makerspace items to support project-based learning, design challenges and / or CTF options
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Category 6 - High School Diploma and general knowledge of library procedures supplemented by post-secondary library courses
    • Category 11 - Library Technician Certificate (2-year program)
  • Experience:
    • Category 6 - Two years’ learning commons experience, preferably in a school setting
    • Category 11 - One year learning commons experience, preferably in a school setting
  • Familiarity with automated library cataloguing and circulation systems, particularly with the current software used by Calgary Catholic preferred
  • Perform more complex LC tasks including database searching, LC network technology, cataloguing and classification, simple web design and records management
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills with a strong service orientation
  • Category 6 - Basic knowledge of Google Drive, Microsoft Office, electronic search techniques and the use of various information technologies in education
  • Category 6 - Basic knowledge of audio-visual equipment operation and maintenance
  • Category 11 - Proficient with Google Drive, Microsoft Office, electronic search techniques and the use of various information technologies in education
  • Fluency in languages will be a definite asset for French Immersion and International Spanish Academy schools
