Job summary

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is seeking a Lead SQL Database Engineer (Azure) in Canada. The role covers deployment, migration, and administration of on-prem and Azure SQL databases, with emphasis on performance, security, backups, and disaster recovery.

You will partner with IT and application teams to ensure robust data services. The ideal candidate has 10–12 years in SQL DBA, strong scripting in PowerShell/Python, and hands-on Azure SQL expertise.

Qualifications

• 10–12 years of experience in SQL Database Administration.
• Experience with backup strategies, replication, and DR solutions for SQL.
• Monitoring and tuning MS SQL Server databases for performance.
• Deep knowledge of indexes and statistics.
• Familiarity with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.

Responsibilities

• Deploy, migrate, implement, and administer databases across on-prem and Azure SQL environments.
• Monitor performance, security, backups, and failover readiness; troubleshoot escalated issues.
• Automate routine DBA tasks with PowerShell and Python; patch and test changes.
• Collaborate with application support and development teams; create documentation and runbooks.
• Provide after-hours support as needed and participate in DR testing.

You are responsible for performance monitoring, security, troubleshooting, backups, error checks, and replication and works directly with other teams to triage and troubleshoot on escalating issues. You install, configure, maintain and patch SQL Servers, test backup/recovery, replication, failover, and disaster recovery, deploy new database and code per change requests and provides troubleshooting and support including after-hours support.CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Assists in project planning and management with clients and other staff members and creating documentation and maintenance plans, assigning monitoring threshold values,Who you AreYou must demonstrate 10 -12 years of experience in. SQL Database Administration with relational database. In addition to this, You must have an experience with backup strategies, replication, and DR solutions for SQL, monitoring and tuning MS SQL Server databases for optimum performance and a deep knowledge of indexes, index management, statistics, performance tuning. This position demands comprehensive expertise in SQL Server database administration, along with a thorough familiarity with the distinct capabilities and limitations of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server deployed on Azure Virtual Machines.You have a degree. A Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or equivalent is preferred.You are a certified professional. Microsoft Azure Certification is desired.Its is an asset if you have experience with Basic PowerShell and Python knowledge or any other scripting language and familiarity with SQL Integration Services, Postgres and Oracle.You act like an owner.
