Job summary

CIBC is seeking a Lead SQL Database Engineer (Azure) in Toronto to deploy, migrate, and administer databases across on‑prem and Azure SQL environments. You will monitor performance, ensure security, perform backups, and support disaster recovery while coordinating with cross‑functional teams.

The role supports a hybrid work model with 1–3 days on‑site. You should bring 10–12 years of SQL DB experience, Azure expertise, and scripting skills (PowerShell, Python).

Qualifications

• 10-12 years of SQL Database Administration experience with relational databases.
• Experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
• Familiarity with backup, replication, and DR solutions.

Responsibilities

• Database Administration: Manage SQL Server and Azure SQL databases; monitor, patch, backup/recovery, failover.
• Troubleshooting: Resolve production issues; automate tasks with PowerShell/Python.
• Automation: Automate routine DBA tasks using PowerShell and Python.
• Collaboration: Work with architects, developers, and support teams; create maintenance plans and monitoring thresholds.

What you will be doing

As an Lead SQL Database Engineer (Azure) you will be responsible for deployment, migration, implementation, and administration of databases and support of all database environments and related applications on on-prem and Azure SQL Databases. You are responsible for performance monitoring, security, troubleshooting, backups, error checks, and replication and works directly with other teams to triage and troubleshoot on escalating issues. You install, configure, maintain and patch SQL Servers, test backup/recovery, replication, failover, and disaster recovery, deploy new database and code per change requests and provides troubleshooting and support including after-hours support.

How will you succeed

• Database Administration - Manage SQL Server Databases, Azure SQL databases, instances Backup and restore on‑prem and Azure SQL databases. Also managed instances Monitor SQL Agent jobs and respond to critical job notifications on failure.

• Troubleshooting - Troubleshoot and resolve problems with production systems; escalates issues and facilitates resolution. Automate common management tasks using PowerShell. Evaluates data access and security to ensure that electronic data resources are available to those who need access and protected Automates database Management tasks. You are a DBA with developer skills and a mindset.

• Automation - Experience automating routine DBA tasks using PowerShell and Python.

• Collaboration - Works collaboratively with the application support and development team including architects, developers to ensure project success. Assists in project planning and management with clients and other staff members and creating documentation and maintenance plans, assigning monitoring threshold values,

Who you Are

• You must demonstrate 10 -12 years of experience in. SQL Database Administration with relational database. In addition to this, You must have an experience with backup strategies, replication, and DR solutions for SQL, monitoring and tuning MS SQL Server databases for optimum performance and a deep knowledge of indexes, index management, statistics, performance tuning. This position demands comprehensive expertise in SQL Server database administration, along with a thorough familiarity with the distinct capabilities and limitations of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server deployed on Azure Virtual Machines.

• You have a degree. A Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or equivalent is preferred.

• You are a certified professional. Microsoft Azure Certification is desired.

• Its is an asset if you have experience with Basic PowerShell and Python knowledge or any other scripting language and familiarity with SQL Integration Services,Postgres and Oracle.
