Job summary

RBC is seeking a Lead Software Engineer in Toronto to own the development lifecycle of critical back‑end services, balancing hands‑on coding with team leadership. You will helm a team of 3–5 developers, drive technical direction, and champion a product mindset within an Agile environment.

You will work on modern Java cloud applications, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms such as OpenShift, Kubernetes, and Docker, while mentoring peers and encouraging cross‑functional collaboration

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with Java cloud applications (12 factor).
• Proven ability to ship back-end services (API, messaging, persistence) using cloud platforms like OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker.
• Proficient in leading a team through full development lifecycle from design to production.
• Familiar with Agile methodologies and SDLC optimization.
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture.
• 3–5+ years in senior or lead development roles.

What will you do?

• Make hands‑on code contributions to back‑end applications within an Agile development team.
• Lead a team of 3‑5 developers. Provide expert technical leadership and support the team in simplifying complex technical challenges.
• Encourage cross‑functional collaboration and contribute to a high‑performing team culture.
• Facilitate growth and continuous improvement through leading by example, mentorship and timely feedback.
• Experiment with emerging technologies and proof of concepts to help shape technical direction.

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have:

• Strong, hands‑on experience with building modern Java cloud applications (12 factor applications).
• Practical experience shipping various types of back‑end applications (API, messaging, persistence, etc.) to production leveraging cloud native platforms (OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker, etc.)
• Proficiency with leading a team through the full development lifecycle, from design to code to production.
• Familiarity with various Agile delivery methodologies and SDLC optimization.
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture.
• 3‑5+ years of industry experience in senior or lead‑level development roles.

Nice‑to‑Have:

• Experience with applying emerging AI tools and techniques to generate production code.
• Experience with system monitoring, introspection and observability (Splunk, Dynatrace, ELK, etc.)
• Experience with event‑driven architecture (Kafka, MQ).
• Experience with microservices and distributed systems design (load balancing, discovery, resiliency, backpressure, performance tradeoffs).
• Knowledge of the banking or financial services domain, especially money movement.
