Job description

About You:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-driven Lead Prototype Machinist- Machinist/Model Maker to join our team. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in manual and CNC machining techniques, combined with in-depth knowledge of prototyping high-precision, tight-tolerance components in plastic and metal. In this role, you will be directly responsible for machining complex parts used for prototyping, where accuracy, repeatability, and quality are essential. You’ll work hands-on with advanced multi-axis CNC equipment as well as standard machining tools, translating engineering specifications into flawless parts while collaborating closely with our engineering, science and manufacturing teams to design and fabricate prototype parts, fixtures and assemblies to support development efforts.

What you will do:

  • Utilize your expertise in machining and prototyping processes to provide design input, setup and fabricate prototype parts in plastic and metal.

  • Set up, operate and maintain CNC milling and turning centers

  • Create CAM programs from 3D models and work directly with designers to improve machinability of prototype parts.

  • Machine components to tight tolerances using detailed engineering drawings and CAD/CAM files.

  • Conduct in-process inspections using precision metrology equipment (micrometers, indicators, height gauges, CMM)

  • Operate manual milling machines, automatic and manual surface grinders, and other machining fixtures.

  • Select and adjust tooling, feeds, and speeds optimized for plastic and metal machining

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements in tool selection, workholding, or programming.

  • Work closely with engineering teams to meet critical tolerances and finishes.

  • Develop and maintain clean documentation, including job travelers, inspection records, and setup sheets.

  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives around tooling, programming, and workflow.

  • Design and build gages, jigs and fixtures to enable precision machining as well as support assembly operations.

What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a CNC machinist in a high-precision, regulated, manufacturing environment.

  • Proven track record of holding tolerances tighter than ±0.0005”.

  • Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3D models.

  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, with a preference for SolidWorks and Cimatron.

  • Ability to set up and program CNC machines, including 3-axis and 5-axis machining centers.

  • Understanding of cGMP and the associated documentation requirements.

  • Strong understanding of cutting tools, tool life optimization, and feeds/speeds for non-metallic materials.

  • Machinist or tool & die certification (preferred).
