Specific functions of a team leader include the following:
- Performs hourly position (cook and/or dietetic assistant).
- Reviews call-offs and follows procedure for calling in replacements, reorganizing tasks to cover vacancies.
- Upholds policies of the department and WVUH, including cash handling, ordering food and supplies (web-based, phone, pars); completes inventory, safety, and sanitation quality checks.
- Oversees training, prepares food, and ensures daily departmental objectives are achieved.
- Serves as departmental representative in the absence of the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
For West Virginia locations:
- Valid Food Service Worker Permit (FSWP) from the local health department, surrounding counties, ServSafe, or StateFoodSafety prior to starting, or obtain a Temporary FSWP no later than the first day worked and a permanent FSWP within 1 week of start date or next available class.
- County Person-in-Charge (PIC) training within first 30 days or first available class (excluding Ohio, Mercer, and Kanawha County).
- One (1) year food service experience.
For Ohio locations:
- County PIC training within first 30 days or first available class.
- One (1) year food service experience.
For Maryland locations:
- Must have a valid Food Service Worker Permit (FSWP) issued by ServSafe or equivalent issuer prior to starting.
- Must maintain a valid FSWP throughout employment.
- One (1) year food service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Experience in a leadership role within the area.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities and may include other duties as assigned:
- Ensure products meet department standards, including temperature, labeling, ingredients, appearance, and taste. Verify quality of received foods.
- Check patient trays for accuracy and compliance with diet requests, ensuring standardized portions.
- Follow all safety policies, report hazards, and enforce FDA food codes related to labeling, dating, temperature, stock rotation, hand hygiene, and glove use.
- Properly use and store cleaning chemicals; maintain cleanliness of food service areas.
- Provide excellent customer service, address concerns promptly, and communicate effectively with staff and management.
- Review call-off logs, coordinate staffing, and delegate tasks to ensure department coverage.
- Work closely with management and staff, serve as departmental contact in absence of management, and ensure the department phone line is answered.
- Monitor food waste, suggest adjustments to minimize waste, and prevent theft.
- Assist in training new and current employees, conducting or overseeing training sessions.
- Prepare, cook, and serve food as assigned, ensuring safety and quality standards.
- Be proficient in all kitchen tasks, operate equipment safely, and train others as needed.
- Maintain effective communication with management, coworkers, and other departments.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Push/pull up to 100 pounds.
- Stand for extended periods.
Working Environment
- Noisy, often hot environment.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in computer skills, especially Excel and Word.
- Ability to understand written and oral communication.
