Job description

Job Description

Inspects services and maintains diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations. Diagnoses diesel engine malfunctions and makes repairs using hand tools, measuring instruments, and machine tools. Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts, operating mechanical equipment. May qualify as a shop service locomotive engineer per FRA standards.

Requires knowledge of FRA regulations related to locomotives, blue flag protection, and safety practices.

Performs daily (24-hour) locomotive inspections, including air brake testing, following FRA regulations and company policies.

Conducts periodic locomotive services such as oil changes, turbo inspections, fueling, filter replacements, greasing, electrical testing, and repairs.

Replaces locomotive components like wheels, trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear, gear cases, cylinders, and heating equipment.

Diagnoses malfunctions in engines, air systems, trucks, or other components to determine repairs or replacements needed.

Must handle hazardous and non-hazardous waste products properly.

Performs daily locomotive servicing: fueling, watering, lubricating, cleaning, and checking supplies. Conducts periodic and annual inspections per FRA regulations.

Required Skills

Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lbs., good vision for gauges and manuals, effective communication, reaching, bending, stooping, twisting, kneeling, squatting, grasping, climbing, balancing, walking on uneven terrain, and crawling in tight spaces.

The role requires exerting forces up to 125 lbs. occasionally. A valid driver’s license is required; CDL preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Medium to heavy work, including lifting up to 80 lbs. without assistance. Work involves handling tools, working in confined spaces, and walking long distances on uneven terrain. Must work outdoors in all weather conditions.
