The Lead Landfill Operator position is responsible for the safe, day-to-day operations of waste treatment, oil treatment, and water injection, with a strong focus on customer service. This role requires familiarity with all landfill operations, including scale operations, heavy equipment operation, truck ticketing systems, landfill and building maintenance, and sampling. As the Lead Operator will be in regular contact with customers, excellent communication skills and a high level of customer service are essential. The Lead Landfill Operator is also responsible for providing proper training to Operator Trainees, making strong attention to detail critical. As this is a safety-sensitive role, and due to the nature of the working conditions, the Lead Operator must be both mentally and physically fit to perform the required tasks and responsibilities effectively.

Work Environment

The role of Lead Landfill Operator is structured as a full-time position, working 5 days a week, 40-hours, with the potential for overtime depending on role requirements.

A Day in The Life
  • Administering scale operations and data entry
  • Conducting ongoing equipment maintenance
  • Collecting random samples
  • Responsible for proper equipment operation
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Landfill and for supervising the Landfill Operators
  • Plant safety (i.e. ensuring that each operation is following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and safety work procedures, Standard Work Procedure (SWP) permitting, Hazard Assessments and iTrak items are entered and closed in a timely manner)
  • Ensure compliance to SECURE’s internal Governance Programs
  • Assigning roles to each Operator on shift and supervising each Operator’s area in the plant
  • General housekeeping (ensuring that the Landfill is kept clean and safe)
  • Training (ensuring each Operator is training in required areas, should be daily/ongoing)
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • Current status level must be Operator 1
  • Experience with heavy equipment and deep well disposal would be an asset
  • A High School Diploma, General Education Diploma or equivalent
  • A valid and acceptable Driver’s license and successful completion of Pre-employment testing
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience with equipment and computer systems
  • Current and valid safety tickets, including; H2S Alive, First Aid Level One C, Confined Space Entry, WHMIS and TDG
  • A strong attention to detail, communication skills and a profound ability to work long hours in a mentally and physically demanding work environment
  • Proven ability to clearly and accurately document their work and ensure consistent communication with the Facility Manager and other Leads
  • Must be able to multi-task and demonstrate good decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to work well under limited amount of supervision
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and safe work practices
