Job description

Our Chalk River campus is seeking a Utilities Operations Leadhand to take charge of Utilities Operations training, procedures, and safety documentation while driving operational excellence. What will you be doing!

  • Developing and maintaining Utilities Operations training programs, Operating Procedures, and Order-to-Operate/Lockout-Tagout (OTO/LOTO) documentation.
  • Assisting in ensuring compliance with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) regulations for registered/guarded plants and associated equipment within the Site Utilities area.
  • Providing direction and support to Operating Engineers managing Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and building systems at the Chalk River campus and Deep River buildings.
  • Assisting in resolving production and operational issues within the team.
  • Understanding a broad range of safety-related codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines, including Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Protection, TSSA Act, Canada Labour Code, Technical Operating Engineers, Boiler & Pressure Vessel regulations, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) codes, and environmental liquid and airborne emissions.
  • Supporting operational safety through the graded implementation of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) N286 Operations.
  • Inputting into concept development, design, and installation of Powerhouse and HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Assessing causal factors and root causes of unplanned events, and establishing effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Demonstrating a systematic approach to decision making by identifying, analyzing, and generating alternatives to issues and problems.
  • Identifying day-to-day maintenance issues, initiating work requests, and liaising with the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer (COE), Shift Supervisors, and maintenance personnel to address maintenance needs.
  • Taking initiative to resolve problems and implement appropriate actions.
  • Addressing escalated issues from lower levels and supporting those levels in issue resolution.
  • Applying mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills and abilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • A Third Class Operating Engineer’s Certificate for the Province of Ontario is required.
  • Experience
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the operation of high-pressure steam plants.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of Ontario Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA) Operating Engineer Regulations 219/01.
    • Understanding of boilers (oil, natural gas, electric), fans, pumps, motors, compressors, piping systems, chillers, HVAC, water/wastewater treatment equipment, and related auxiliary systems.
    • Demonstrated leadership experience and capabilities.
    • Trade experience with broad knowledge of tools and the ability to assess risk and performance in daily activities.
    • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, self-motivation, and analytical skills.
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and flow sheets.
    • Skilled in writing procedures, creating spreadsheets, researching information, and generating reports.
    • Working knowledge of computers and relevant software applications.
    • Familiarity with computerized controls and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
    • Knowledge of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and associated equipment.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills to gather information from customers and explain technical issues clearly.
    • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
