Job description

Black & McDonald is looking for a full time Lead Hand Labourer for our Dartmouth, NS location, they will work in HRM and the surrounding area. The Lead Hand reports directly to the site supervisor and will be responsible for leading a team of skilled labourers. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Preparing site for the day's tasks
  2. Leading a small group of skilled labourers to complete daily tasks under the direction of the Site Supervisor
  3. Loading and delivering materials
  4. Using a variety of tools and machines such as plate tampers, jumping jacks, core drills, levels, power drills, grinders, saws, etc.
  5. Installation of conduit, rebar, forms, bases, Sono tubes
  6. Assisting in watching excavations, including raking, shoveling, and miscellaneous tasks
  7. Reading and interpreting blueprints and site plans

Work Experience Requirements:

  1. At least 5-7 years of hands-on experience in the construction industry
  2. Demonstrated ability to successfully direct others on small to mid-sized civil projects
  3. Knowledge of other building trades and how they integrate into projects
  4. Experience with concrete work and forming would be considered an asset
  5. Strong expertise in both rough and finish carpentry
  6. Operating machinery (tampers, skid steer loader, telehandler, backhoe)
  7. Driving with trailers/ Condition 15 would be an asset

Additional Requirements:

  1. Work safely in a construction environment
  2. Must hold a valid NS Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract to operate company vehicles, including pickups and trailers
  3. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  4. Ability to handle physical demands – lifting 50+ lbs, standing, walking, and bending for long hours
  5. Highly detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively
  6. Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to challenges
  7. Must be able to obtain a variety of security clearances

Pay: $28.00-$30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 45 per week (Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work)
