Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a Lead Engineer, Structural to join our Engineering Team. You will develop, oversee a unified peer-review mechanism for designs and standards, lead programs, and mentor other engineers.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer - Structural, you will manage external contracts, ensure design consistency, and contribute to construction support for transit facilities and bridges. A P.Eng in Ontario and broad structural experience are required.

Qualifications

• University degree in Civil Engineering (Structures) with multidisciplinary design experience.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario (P.Eng) required.
• Knowledge of structural design for buildings and bridges and relevant codes.

As part of the Engineering Department, you will be responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing a unified mechanism and process for peer reviews of engineering designs and design standards, leading programs, and mentoring other engineers.

What You Will Do

Report to the Chief Engineer - Structural, overseeing and evaluating peer reviews, overseeing and evaluating design approaches on different projects, bringing uniformity to the section’s approach to review and commenting on the design of external parties, liaising with other design sections or stakeholders, managing external contracts, and identifying the need for creation of new design standards.

This involves the following:

• Review the drawings, specification, reports, memos and other documents that are being issued at project milestones.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders on items related to complex design concepts, constructability input, and all other items that are seen to be critical to the successful completion of project.
• Review the design standards (TTC DM, MS, SD, DD) being prepared.
• Ensure compliance with codes and standards.
• Oversee and evaluate design approaches on different projects.
• Bring uniformity to the Section’s approach to review and commenting on the design of external parties.
• Manage external contracts.
• Identify the need for the creation of new design standards.
• Leads different programs and tasks.
• Performs and supervises structural engineering design for all types of transit structures, marks up drawings and specifications, stamps drawings for tender and construction and participates in all aspects of construction support.
• Reviews structural engineering designs and documents prepared by external consultants.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

• Completion of a university degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in structures combined with extensive related experience in a multidisciplinary design environment; or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
• Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is mandatory.
• In-depth and practical knowledge of Civil Engineering (Structural) principles, methods and practices for the design and construction of various structures including transit facility major structures.
• Detailed functional knowledge of applicable codes and standards that govern structural design for buildings and bridges e.g. Ontario Building Code, Canadian Highway and Bridge Design Code, CSA A23.1/2/3, CSA S-16, CSA S413, etc.
• Working knowledge of complex computational tools like STAAD PRO, S-Concrete, and proficiency in MS Office applications is essential.
• Practical experience and knowledge of construction techniques through systematic and frequent field review of own designs.
• Practical experience in conducing peer review and review of other engineer’s work.
• A valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license, and use of own vehicle for occasional site visits and inspections during non-revenue hours (approx. 2am to 6am).
• Provides emergency engineering support and guidance for the operating departments on a 24-hour basis.
