developing engineering/process optimization business opportunities in support of the
Agency's business goals.
About the job
You will:
• Provide specialized engineering leadership and applied theoretical and practical subject
matter expertise for the design, engineering, operational troubleshooting, optimization,
environmental compliance and provision of municipal and industrial water systems.
• Lead and/or conduct comprehensive performance evaluations, assessments and operational
analyses regarding the design and capacity of water plants providing technical guidance,
support compliance and optimization and make capital recommendations.
• Develop engineering opportunities and foster client relationships in support of the Agency's
business goals.
• Mentor engineers at all levels and create opportunities for growth and development.
• Prepare technical reports/memos with recommendations and solutions related to these
areas.
• Provide expert opinion to stakeholders regarding design development (engineering
calculations and modifications), environmental regulations and engineering and operational
guidelines.
• Review consulting engineering preliminary and final design documents to ensure compliance
with legislation and standards and provide process optimization recommendations in design
and operations.
• Plan and evaluate processes and introduce business efficiencies through best practices
concepts to reduce costs and maximize returns.
• Coordinate with engineers, technical staff and/or partners to ensure project needs are met in
a timely and effective manner.
• Lead and oversee the planning and delivery of OCWA's water treatment process optimization
projects.
• Support the development of engineering designs and project plans to establish project
objectives, ensure that project timelines and commitments are being met in accordance with
engineering technical standards.
• Prepare regular and ad hoc project status reports for the Director; identify and resolve project
issues, and ensure the successful and timely completion of all projects/initiatives.
• Provide process/technical input and review in support of local hubs for the RFP and tendering
process for external contract resources.
• Provide onsite and remote technical advice, expertise, support and guidance across Ontario
by trouble shooting process, hydraulic, solids and mechanical issues and work to optimize
water treatment plants alongside local hub teams.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Licensed Professional Engineer by Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) in good standing
• A valid ‘G' driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario.
• Required to travel including to remote locations through various modes of transportation.
• Chemical/Civil/Environmental Engineering degree from a well-recognized engineering
university will be considered as an asset.
• Carry and maintain assigned OPS assets.
• Work outside in varied weather and climate conditions when required in the field.
• To use in the prescribed circumstances/manner all prescribed safety materials, equipment,
devices, and clothing.
Knowledge:
• Technical knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of Chemical, Civil or
Environmental engineering discipline, wastewater and /or water related fields, engineering
design and analyses of complex wastewater and water systems to lead the development,
design, modelling and optimization of industrial/municipal water facilities.
• Knowledge of engineering design and operation of complex wastewater systems and the
policies and regulations pertaining to the collection treatment and discharge of municipal
sewage, biosolids, stormwater and industrial wastewater.
• Private sector, academic and international advances and innovations in technologies for the
treatment and the collection, treatment and discharge of municipal sewage, biosolids,
stormwater and industrial wastewater. The application of this knowledge to assess engineering
feasibility, applicability and economic impact of potential implementation of new processes.
• Federal and provincial legislation and regulations, guidelines and sound best management
engineering practices related to the municipal and environmental areas for compliance of
water, wastewater and biosolids work/projects with legislations and regulations.
• Computers and related engineering software to conduct analysis, monitor work progress and
prepare reports. Software applications such as word processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheets,
and database packages to address data, conduct analysis and prepare reports, briefing
materials and presentations.
• Knowledge of government approval processes, protocols/practices and evaluation techniques
to manage the planning, implementation and evaluation of assigned projects.
• Knowledge of Project Management methodologies to successfully deliver projects within the
group business model.
• Research methodologies and evaluation techniques to manage the planning, implementation
and evaluation of assigned projects.
• Research methodologies to identify best practices and technologies to resolve operational and
compliance issues at water treatment plants.
• Maintain and improve knowledge and application of new technologies to improve water
treatment plant operations.
• Knowledge of computer applications and related engineering or data manipulation/analysis
software to conduct analysis, monitor work progress and prepare reports.
Skills and Ability include:
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
• Demonstrated analytical, consultation and problem solving skills.
• Excellent qualitative and quantitative research, planning and evaluating skills.
• Proficiency in strategically identifying research and development needs for the Agency.
• Excellent presentation skills with demonstrated ability to make recommendations for
engineering technology to multiple audiences including technical staff and elected officials.
• Ability to prepare proposals, technical documents, user manuals and guidelines.
• Exceptional organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize well and meet strict
deadlines.
