Description

This position offers the opportunity to directly apply your knowledge of protective relaying and controls systems for HV and EHV substations. As a Project Lead of an engineering and design team, you will work on a wide range of substation modifications and upgrades to support client requirements, including creating calculations, document designs, and specifications.

  • You will be responsible for preparing relaying philosophies, selecting relay, control, and communications equipment, developing SCADA and telecommunication concepts, and overseeing the preparation of I/O assignments and connection diagrams.
  • As a Project Lead Electrical Engineer, you will guide junior and senior engineers and designers in protection and controls engineering design efforts, including coordinating detailed design phases.
  • You will work on challenging assignments involving troubleshooting and solving various engineering issues.
  • You will perform analysis and design of single line diagrams, substation relaying & metering diagrams (e.g., A.C. schematic diagrams), and D.C. schematic diagrams.
  • Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
  • Perform independent reviews of work by others, including calculations and drawings.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance to engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure complete and timely design delivery.
  • Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings and recommendations.
  • Develop your career through peer-learning, sharing knowledge within Sargent & Lundy’s “Communities of Practice.”
  • Mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Travel may be required for design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification.
Qualifications

Note: We do not sponsor work authorization in Canada for this position.

Essential skills and experience:

  • BSEE with power systems or controls emphasis from an accredited program (Canadian or US ABET-accredited).
  • 10+ years of experience in protection, control, and telecommunications for high voltage substations, including design, installation, and coordination.
  • Experience as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience in relay calculations and support documentation.
  • Knowledge of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor software.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI standards.
  • Experience with vendor protective relay equipment (e.g., SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler).
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Valued but not required:

  • P.Eng. license.
  • Experience with in-line, bus, equipment protection, SCADA systems, telemetering, and communications.
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Construction and start-up experience.
  • Testing or commissioning experience.
