The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) regulates the alcohol, gaming, horse racing, and private cannabis retail sectors in Ontario. We are committed to public interest, integrity, and innovation.

Within AGCO’s I+IT Division, the Enterprise Data and Analytics (EDA) Branch seeks a seasoned Lead Data Scientist. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Data Science and Analytics, this role offers a unique opportunity to lead data-driven decision-making in a dynamic regulatory organization.

AGCO’s data landscape varies—some areas are mature, others are just beginning their data journey. This creates a compelling opportunity for a Lead Data Scientist to:

In this role, the successful candidate will:

  1. Design and deliver advanced analytics solutions—predictive models, generative AI, GIS, dashboards
  2. Lead development of cloud-based data science tools using Azure and Microsoft Fabric
  3. Collaborate with teams to identify opportunities where data can inform policy, improve services, and support innovation
  4. Present insights to stakeholders, translating complex findings into actionable recommendations
  5. Operationalize models with field trials, performance tracking, and continuous improvement
  6. Contribute to ethical data governance and shape AGCO’s data maturity roadmap

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Post-secondary education in data science, AI, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or related fields, or equivalent experience
  2. Experience using Python and SQL to solve real problems, applying techniques like regression, clustering, decision trees, neural networks
  3. Proven ability in predictive analytics, building models that support data-informed decisions
  4. Hands-on experience designing, deploying data solutions on cloud platforms like Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Azure ML, Synapse, Foundry, Visual Studio
  5. A growth mindset and experience across the full data science lifecycle
  6. Strong communication skills to convey complex insights to technical and non-technical audiences
  7. Experience with geospatial analysis is a strong asset
  8. Eligibility to work in Canada and ability to pass a criminal background check
