Job description
Lead Arena Service Worker

This position works in the Facilities Management – Recreation Facilities organizational unit. This is supervisory operational, technical and building maintenance work performed in a multipurpose arena facility. An incumbent of this class assigns, reviews, supervises and participates in the work of staff engaged in ice making, routine building and equipment maintenance and repair, janitorial and custodial tasks.

Provides direction and training on work methods and procedures; ensures safety protocols are followed; and resolves minor operational or staff problems and provides feedback to staff. A Lead Arena Service Worker ensures the effective functioning of refrigeration and ice-making equipment; regularly inspects a variety of pumps, valves, filters, meters, motors and gauges to ensure that the equipment meets the operating requirements of the facilities and arenas; and troubleshoots problems and determines corrective action.

Other responsibilities include performing minor repairs and building maintenance work; a variety of safety checks on fire extinguishers, fire alarms and other safety equipment; and maintains an inventory of cleaning products, building maintenance materials and equipment hardware. Obtains the services of and oversees the work of private contractors and ensures compliance with safety and operational standards; provides information and assistance to the public and facility user groups.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the operating principles and procedures of ice-making and refrigeration equipment and the methods, practices and materials used in building maintenance and repair.

Sound knowledge of the methods, materials and operation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and related systems. An incumbent will have working knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems and carpentry applicable to the maintenance of facilities; have the ability to supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff engaged in icemaking, building maintenance and janitorial tasks; and to operate, maintain and repair equipment typically used in a multipurpose arena.

A Refrigeration Operator’s Certificate, First Aid Certificate or equivalent, and a valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required. Please note that a Police Information Check may be required for this position.

Schedule: 40 hours weekly; Shifts are currently scheduled 7 days per week between the hours of 5:30am and 1:30am and may change outside these hours based on operational requirements
