The Opportunity
Rocky View Schools (RVS) invites applications for a continuing, full-time (40 hrs/wk - Monday to Friday) Landscape Gardener position starting immediately at the Education Centre located in Airdrie. The Landscape Gardener is responsible for organizing, supervising and performing tasks related to the maintenance and improvement of school grounds and play areas within Rocky View Schools (RVS). The incumbent supports snow removal in the winter months, and day to day maintenance of school grounds including playgrounds and amenities. The Landscape Gardener is a working lead hand responsible for supervising seasonal labourers and apprentices.
Responsibilities Include
- Ensures RVS grounds are maintained to RVS standards including playgrounds, parking lots, tree and shrub care, sport fields, snow removal, turf care, outdoor classrooms, portables and amenities
- Performs inspections of grounds and equipment, performing timely repairs where required
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates Summer Student Grounds staff in their day-to-day duties
- Participates in planning and installation regarding projects where required
- Operates mechanical and hand powered snow and ice control, and turf and plant healthcare equipment as required
- Conducts playground inspections and ensures timely repairs
- Acts as designate for the Manager of Grounds as assigned
- Conducts daily site hazard assessments, correcting unsafe conditions and following RVS hazard reporting procedures to ensure the safety of RVS staff and visitors
- Provides input to enhance overall safety, improvements and efficiencies
- Maintains accurate and timely records of hours worked, safety requirements, maintenance schedules, inspections, and repairs performed
Education And Experience
- Landscape Gardener Journeyman Certification
- Certification in Pesticide Application, Arboriculture, Playground Inspection, Irrigation, Turfgrass Management, Landscape Construction and/or Horticulture Technology would be an asset
- Demonstrated supervisory experience providing leadership to a crew with varied levels of experience
- Experience with the safe operation and maintenance of commercial landscape and grounds maintenance equipment
- Two or more years’ experience in grounds maintenance and landscaping
- Valid Alberta Motor Vehicle License Class 5
Knowledge And Skills
- Demonstrated ability to apply excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to operate and transport commercial landscape equipment including tow trailers
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
- Ensures priorities are understood and adapts readily to achieve department and RVS goals
- Ability to operate and transport commercial landscape equipment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong critical thinking and attention to detail
