The Open Space Design Section within the Building Great Neighbourhoods and Open Spaces Branch plans, designs, and directs the construction of various open space projects. The design team consists of landscape architects, landscape technologists, and planning technicians who collaboratively develop design and construction drawings to meet holistic project objectives that benefit the communities we work in.
This role offers a chance to contribute to a wide range of landscape architectural projects, utilizing your technical skills in design and drafting. From initial design to construction, including site visits and creating compelling visuals, you will be integral to project success, with increasing responsibility and influence.
What will you do?
- Use AutoCAD & Civil 3D to prepare all plans & process survey data for Open Space projects.
- Prepare concept, preliminary, and detailed designs for open space projects with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency with minimal direction from lead Landscape Architect.
- Prepare As-Built drawings based off of survey data with the same high degree of accuracy & efficiency as directed by the project team.
- Attend and complete site reviews and inspections to ensure design drawings are accurate and being implemented as expected.
- Process submitted survey information and develop topographic and site plans.
- Develop technical specifications to accompany the design and provide the required direction to achieve the overall design intent.
- Prepare bid and scope documentation to inform the development of cost estimates and budgets.
- Attend site visits during design and construction to assist in quality assurance and control of project coordination and implementation.
- Oversee the assignment and completion of smaller projects to subordinate technical staff; check work in progress and at completion; provide technical guidance.
- Lead and prepare business tools along with section, practice and asset initiatives.
- Lead and inspire section staff through an ongoing commitment to culture initiatives and maintaining positive working relationships.
- Perform all other related duties.
Qualifications
- Completion of a two (2) year diploma in NAIT Landscape Architectural Technology.
- Eligible to be registered as a Certified Technologist with the AALA; accreditation with ISA and Certified Arborist where applicable.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible drafting and/or landscape architectural technology experience in the planning and preparation of complete landscape construction drawings, grading plans, planting plans, detailing, topographical surveys, charts and maps and construction monitoring.
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of landscape and construction techniques and practices.
- Knowledge of landscape and construction terminology.
- Knowledge of Adobe Products, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Professional within the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Knowledge of Revit, SketchUp, Rhino and Grasshopper.
- Knowledge of Irrigation design is considered an asset - standards to be developed and expertise would be essential in the development of a corporate standard.
- Knowledge of landscape architectural principles and practices, and modern construction methods and materials, including preparing construction estimates, specifications, demolition and removal plans, detailed grading and drainage plans, quantity take-offs, construction detailing, notification, and general tendering tasks.
- Thorough knowledge of design and drafting terminology, practices, and techniques aligning with industry standards.
- Extensive experience with drafting software applications including programming and troubleshooting, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Vectorworks etc. and related design and drafting programs.
- Clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a client service focus for immediate and remote staff and business partners.

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) and/or method of transportation to get to project sites. Applicants may be required to obtain business use auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business.
Work Environment:
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
