Job summary

Al-Terra Group in Edmonton is seeking a Landscape Architectural Technologist or Landscape Designer to support our Landscape Architecture team across Alberta and British Columbia. The role involves planning, design, and construction of open space projects, from neighbourhood renewals to large public parks and campuses.

You will collaborate with allied disciplines, prepare drawings and specifications, conduct site visits, and contribute to proposals.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Landscape Architecture or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years in a consulting, design, or field-based role.
  • A reliable vehicle and a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare schematic and detailed design drawings using AutoCAD and related software, ensuring consistency with allied disciplines.
  • Carry out site visits, surveys, and assessments to gather existing conditions data and inform design development.
  • Prepare specifications, cost estimates, and tender/contract documents to support project delivery.
  • Conduct construction administration activities, including site meetings, progress reviews, contractor inquiries, shop drawing and submittal reviews, and coordination of approvals and inspections with construction crews and authorities.
  • Assist in preparation of proposals and other marketing materials.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, plant material knowledge, ecological restoration principles, and emerging software/technology.

Are you looking for a new opportunity to work with a great group of people? Al-Terra is seeking a talented and self-motivatedLandscape Architectural Technologist or Landscape Designer to take the next step in their career journey and join our dynamic growing multi-disciplinary team in Edmonton.

This position will support our Landscape Architecture team and allied disciplines in the planning, design, and construction of a diverse range of open space projects at all stages and scales in Edmonton, Calgary and across Alberta and British Columbia. Projects range from neighbourhood renewals, regional trails and corridors to large public parks, campuses, multi-modal streetscapes, waterfronts, plazas and custom detailed design.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare schematic, detailed design drawings, including site plans, grading plans, planting plans, layout plans, and construction details, using AutoCAD and related software. ensuring consistency with allied disciplines (civil, structural, electrical, architecture)
  • Carry out site visits, surveys, and assessments to gather existing conditions data and inform design development.
  • Prepare specifications, cost estimates, and tender/contract documents to support project delivery.
  • Conduct construction administration activities, including site meetings, progress reviews, contractor inquiries, shop drawing and submittal reviews, and coordination of approvals and inspections with construction crews, clients, consultants, and municipal authorities.
  • Perform quality control reviews of drawings and documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to office standards.
  • Assist in preparation of graphic materials (renderings, illustrations, presentation boards) to communicate design concepts to clients, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other marketing materials
  • Stay current with industry best practices, plant material knowledge, ecological restoration principles, and emerging software/technology relevant to landscape architecture.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Landscape Architecture, Design or Technology (or related / transferable education experience such as Urban Design, Planning, Architecture, Environmental, Horticulture or GIS).
  • Minimum three (3) years in a consulting, design, or field-based role, with preference given to candidates with additional experience.
  • A reliable vehicle and a valid Class 5 driver’s license (project-based mileage is compensated).
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Desired Qualifications

  • Registration or eligibility for membership with AALA, BCSLA or other Canadian landscape architecture association is an asset.
  • Demonstrated passion for landscape architecture design, drafting and illustration, with the ability to work collaboratively with project teams as well as individually.
  • Technical expertise, in the preparation of conceptual and detailed design drawings (site plans, grading, planting, details, etc.), specifications, cost estimates, and tender/contract documents in a shared network environment and in coordination with allied disciplines. Stormwater management experience is an asset.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D as well as proficiency with software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and PDF editing software. Additional skills and experience in Sketchup, Lumion, Land F/X, ArcGIS or QGIS, as well as hand drawing skills is an asset.
  • Knowledge of local plant materials, soils, ecological systems, and sustainable landscape practices. A background in ecological restoration and naturalization is an asset
  • Relevant experience working with or for the City of Edmonton, City of Calgary, other Alberta municipalities, and Provincial departments, with an understanding of municipal standards, and approval processes.
  • Construction administration experience including site progress reviews and the coordination of inspections and approvals with contractors and municipal authorities, is considered a strong asset.
  • Excellent digital file management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage time and priorities across multiple concurrent projects to meet deadlines.

Working Conditions

  • Full time, 40 hours per week.
  • Our team works primarily full-time from our office. However, we prioritize flexibility, employee satisfaction, and work-life balance.
  • Field work, including site visits, field reviews, construction observations and site inspections.
  • Occasional travel (Alberta and British Columbia) and overtime, including weekends, may be required.
  • This position reports to the Manager, Landscape Architecture.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Work at a desk for extended periods of time.
