Department: Environment and Climate Change

The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.

Job Information

The Lands Officer provides specialized support in complex land negotiations by offering strategic advice to their supervisor and by liaising with community councils, Senior Administrative Officers, and Community Land Officers. The incumbent is also responsible for preparing annual work plans and associated quarterly objectives. Working directly with six communities, the Lands Officer indirectly influences the budgetary decisions of community governments within the region, particularly those related to land use and infrastructure development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Grants users/lessees/purchasers the legal right to possess or occupy the parcel of land under application.
  • Liaises with appropriately appointed inspectors/auditors to ensure proper review of land administration practices of community governments.
  • Conducts or arranges for local field inspections of specific parcels of land to determine if the grantee is complying with contract terms.
  • Audits the land administration activities of community land agents to determine compliance with departmental policy and procedures.

Key Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of the Environment and Natural Resources Diploma or Criminal Justice Diploma, plus two years of related experience in the field of land administration.
