Lakeview School Cooks

Department: Education – Lakeview School

Classification/Level: CS 1-2 ($18.41 – $28.45)

Employment Status: Full‑Time Term (September to June)

Hours: Monday to Friday (up to 30 hours per week)

Position: Head Cook / Assistant Cook

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the principal or vice‑principal, the cooks are responsible for all aspects of food planning and preparation provided within Lakeview School. The Cooks will oversee and ensure the highest quality of standards for nutritional meals and snacks for Lakeview Students, adhering to the Canada/First Nations Inuit & Metis Food Guidelines and public health regulations, including food storage and preparation.

Essential Functions
Kitchen Management
  • Comply with MFN Personnel Policies & Procedures, Food Safety Standards & Guidelines, including Health & Safety procedures within the work area.
  • Prepares and maintains food/freezer/pantry inventory, along with equipment.
  • Responsible to keep track of best‑before‑date labels to ensure all perishable and fresh foods are safe for consumption.
  • Maintain and monitor current listing of children with food allergies or special dietary needs.
  • Monitors working condition of all kitchen appliances and informs Supervisor of any concerns.
  • Conducts housekeeping cleaning tasks to ensure kitchen is kept orderly and thoroughly disinfected and sanitized always.
Food Planning & Preparation
  • Ensures meals and snacks are prepared onsite in a timely manner to meet program routines and schedules, avoiding pre‑packaged and processed foods.
  • Practices safe food handling techniques, preparation, and storage for maximum nutritional value.
  • Plans daily menus and tracks allergic and special dietary requirements and informs kitchen help.
  • For budgeting purposes, maintain cost effective menu planning and purchasing based on planned menus in consultation with the Supervisor and cross‑reference grocery purchase vs grocery receipt.
  • Based on weekly menus, prepares, and completes a grocery list to include ordering and shopping.
Qualifications
  • OSSD or Equivalent, and at least one year direct work‑related experience.
  • Current WHMIS Certification or willingness to acquire.
  • Safe Food Handler’s Certificate or willingness to acquire.
Other
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions for cleaning supplies and products.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment, to maintain effective working relationships with all staff.
  • Maintain professional attitude when interacting with students, parents, and all visitors.
  • Maintain confidentiality always.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills; and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Anishinabek culture, traditions, and practices.
  • Understanding and fluency in Anishinabemowin or willingness to learn are strong assets.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle would be an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to submit a current thirty (30) day CRC/VSS; and an offer of employment is contingent upon the receipt of a satisfactory CRC/VSS record.

CRC/VSS Rationale: M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate, and the CRC must have a record clear and or dated of any convictions relating to sexual interference, sexual assault, or related charges. The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an original.
