Job summary

Black & McDonald Limited is seeking a Labourer to support utilities construction projects in Calgary. You will work with trades, coordinators and site staff to move materials, assemble forms, mix concrete, level earth, and maintain site safety.

The role requires 2–5 years in construction, a high school diploma, and the ability to read locate drawings. Accommodations and safety training are provided where needed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma.
• 2-5 years’ experience in construction/general labour on utilities projects.
• Experience reading locate drawings is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload construction materials and move materials to work areas.
• Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, shoring and barricades.
• Mix, pour and spread materials such as concrete.
• Level earth to fine grade specifications using rake and shovel.
• Remove rubble and debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows.
• Operate pneumatic hammers, vibrators and tampers as directed.
• Tend or feed machines or equipment used in construction.
• Clean up chemical spills and other contaminants (as trained).
• Oil and grease hoists and mobile equipment.
• Direct traffic at or near construction sites.
• Perform other activities at construction sites as directed.

ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Project Manager, or their designate, the Labourer is responsible for performing general labor activities on utility (electrical and civil) construction sites. They will liaise with tradespersons, coordinators, managers, and site superintendent personnel to accomplish project milestones in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Load and unload construction materials and move materials to work areas

• Mix, pour and spread materials such as concrete
• Level earth to fine grade specifications using rake and shovel

• Clean up chemical spills and other contaminants (as trained)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• High School diploma

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• 2-5 years’ experience working in the construction industry in a General Labourer role, on utilities (electrical/civil) projects

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Experience reading and interpreting locate drawings, and calling in locates is considered an asset.
  
• Construction Safety Certifications including the following are considered assets.
