Job summary

The Corporation of the Town of Whitby is seeking a Labourer to support Roads and Traffic within the Public Works Department. You will operate and maintain equipment, perform flagging and traffic control, and assist with road repairs and seasonal maintenance.

You will have at least one year of related experience, a valid DZ driver’s license, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The role offers a comprehensive benefits package, 40 hours per week, and flexible shifts.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year directly related experience in roads and roadway maintenance.
• Valid Class DZ Driver’s Licence maintained in good standing.
• Minimum of one year experience operating vehicles over 11,000 kg GVW including tandem axle trucks.
• Successful completion of Defensive Driving training.
• Physically fit to perform strenuous labour with heavy lifting up to 50 lbs and in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Flagging and traffic control; installation of traffic signs and detours.
• Repairing and/or installing Town fences and performing concrete repairs and installations.
• Assisting with roadway patrolling, maintenance, repairs and/or cleanup; tree trimming/removal.
• Snow clearing and application of salt on roads and sidewalks; operate tools safely.
• Provide excellent customer service and assist staff as needed.

• Reporting to the Supervisor(s) of Operations – Roads/Traffic, and under the direction of the Working Foreperson(s), the Labourer is responsible for providing general labour for duties involved within the Roads and Traffic sections of the Public Works Department, including operating and maintaining various equipment, vehicles and tools.
• Flagging and traffic control; installation of traffic signs and detours; repairing and/or installing Town fences; concrete repairs and installation; assisting with roadway patrolling, maintenance, repairs and/or clean up; tree trimming and/or removal; snow clearing and application of salt on the road and/or sidewalk areas; ensuring all equipment and/or tools are operated in a safe and professional manner.
• Providing excellent customer service, including responding to inquiries/concerns from the general public and other members of staff in a courteous manner; and, assisting with other duties as assigned.

What You Bring To Our Team

• A secondary school graduation diploma.
• A minimum of one (1) year directly related experience in roads and roadway maintenance.
• A valid Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence maintained in good standing.
• A minimum of one (1) year demonstrated experience operating vehicles over 11,000 k.g., G.V.W., including tandem axle trucks.
• Successful completion of Defensive Driving training.
• Physically fit and capable of performing strenuous physical labour with heavy lifting up to 50 lbs., in varying weather conditions.
• The ability to operate various tools and equipment in a technical and safe manner.

• Salary Range/Hourly rate: $29.30 - $36.66
• Hybrid information: Mobile Frontline Hours: Flex hours, including days, afternoons and nights.
• Forty (40) hours per week.
• Shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., Sunday to Saturday.
• Flexible hours maybe required during winter control and/or emergency situations.
