Job description

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. The District of West Vancouver’s Engineering Construction Department currently have an opening for a temporary full-time Labourer to join our Roads team. The successful candidate will perform a variety of manual tasks working in the Engineering Construction department.These tasks can include:

  • Street road maintenance – ditching, slashing, and sidewalk repairs;
  • Road pavement maintenance and repair – assisting with installation of hot mix asphalt for utility patches and potholes.
  • Assisting in spill response and motor vehicle accident clean up
  • Assisting with traffic control – with a valid TCP certification
  • Winter operation maintenance – salting, brining and snow plowing streets and sidewalks
  • operating basic hand and power tools; such as, weed eaters, pole pruners, chain saw, shovels, pipe saws, plate tamper, etc.;
  • provide manual labourer assistance on various tasks and assignments; and
  • cleaning trucks and equipment as needed;
  • maintaining equipment in a safe and secure manner;
  • maintaining daily pick-up records;
  • other related duties as required.

The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Work effectively and efficiently in a team environment while maintaining a safety first mentality;
  • use a variety of tools for general maintenance and construction work; and
  • work outdoors in a physically demanding role in all types of weather conditions.

Preference will be given to candidates with any of the following credentials:

  • Experience or training in road construction or maintenance; Experience working in and around traffic;
  • Landscaping experience (either hardscape or softscape installations);
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as a mini excavator, bucket truck, skidsteer, backhoe, and front-end loader;
  • Experience with winter operations such as snow clearing, salting, etc;

Candidate possessing the following is considered an asset:

  • Valid Class 1 or 3 BC Drivers License;
  • Experience as a Traffic Control Person (TCP);
  • TCP certification

The candidates must hold a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License. The successful candidates are required to supply an acceptable driver’s abstract, claims history, police information check and a copy of their credentials.

Hours of Work:

40 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)

Starting Rate of Pay:

$30.88 per hour plus 14% in lieu of benefits

This position has a pay structure with three steps which increase based on hours completed in the position.
