Job description

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) is a unique collection of waste processing and research facilities that is owned and operated by the City of Edmonton. The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF) is where waste arrives and is divided into three separate waste streams: organics processing, biofuels production and landfill. We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to join the EWMC’s crew as a Tip Floor Attendant. You will succeed in this position if you work well on a team and can communicate in a respectful and inclusive way.

What will you do?

  • Screen waste and greet customers
  • Answer questions and direct customers to proper drop off locations
  • Traffic control in and outside the IPTF facility
  • Clean and wash inside the IPTF facility
  • Perform general landscaping duties and litter control
  • Clear snow on walkways
  • Ensure the project abides by any applicable City of Edmonton Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Standards and Guidelines
  • Ensure the highest standards of performance are maintained according to the safety program or site safety program
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings and advise of any health and safety concerns
Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) year experience in customer service or waste service

Skills Required for Success:

  • Knowledge of toxic materials and WHMIS training is required
  • Well developed interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of OH&S Regulations
  • Ability to problem solve, adapt to new circumstances & overcome challenges
  • Ability to deal with customers in a courteous and professional manner including the ability to resolve issues with unsatisfied customers
  • Excellent verbal and written skills including the ability to understand, execute and relay instruction
  • Ability to train and instruct others
  • Ability to assess incoming materials for acceptability & to screen out different types of waste & hazardous materials

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including being fit-tested for and wearing a N95 respirator and steel-toed boots, is a requirement of this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform moderate labor (shoveling snow, litter collection, extensive standing, walking)
