Labourer II, Residential Transfer Station Attendant Up to 11 months

The City of Edmonton's Residential Transfer Station (RTS) at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) is where Edmontonians can bring household waste and chemicals for safe disposal. As a Labourer II at the facility, you will apply previous waste transferring experience to provide excellent customer service and ensure the safety of all visitors.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a preliminary review of incoming materials to determine their acceptability, including identifying hazardous waste.
  • Assist with unloading and organizing refuse, oversized items, paint, oil, batteries, propane tanks, aerosols, etc., into collection areas.
  • Safely handle and process a wide range of contaminated and hazardous materials, as well as general refuse and recyclable materials.
  • Prepare household hazardous waste for proper disposal and/or transport offsite, including proper containment and manifests.
  • Prepare chemicals for transport to disposal.
  • Sort household waste (HHW), electronic waste (e-waste), and other materials.
  • Recover refrigerant from refrigerators, freezers, water coolers, and air conditioners.
  • Perform all tasks related to refuse and hazardous waste safely and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide traffic control and coordination for safe flow of vehicles and waste materials through the facility.
  • Use of Telehandler, pallet jacks, and Toolcat to move, load, and stage materials.
  • Perform litter control and collection.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade or equivalent.
  • One (1) year in a waste transferring environment with experience in waste and hazardous materials handling and customer service, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Assets
  • WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
Skills for Success
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of safety and environmental precautions and hazards related to the work.
  • Ability to learn and use related equipment and tools, including telehandler, Toolcat, and hand/power tools.
  • Ability to screen waste materials, assessing their type and hazard level.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and contractors.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain basic records.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labour in various weather and environmental conditions.

Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to comply with the City of Edmonton's PPE Code of Practice.
  • Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with respiratory PPE policies is required.
  • Hire is dependent on a satisfactory Criminal Records Check (CRC); there may be a cost involved.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent); maintaining a City Driver's permit is required.

This is a temporary full-time position for up to 11 months.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week (Sunday-Saturday).

Salary: $23.504 - $31.302 per hour.
