Job summary

Join Parks and Roads Services as a Labourer II in Urban Forestry, contributing to the Way We Green initiative in Edmonton. This temporary full-time seasonal position entails assisting in tree maintenance and operations while ensuring safety compliance. Ideal candidates will have experience in the tree industry and possess a Grade 10 education.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year experience in tree industry, including pruning and maintenance.
  • Possession of valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license.
  • Certification in Emergency First Aid and WHMIS training.

Responsibilities

  • Assist equipment operators with chipping brush and tree maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain equipment including chainsaws and wood chippers.
  • Provide public interaction and traffic control while conducting duties safely.

What will you do
  • Assist Equipment Operator IIs in chipping brush.
  • Work on or around heavy equipment including wood chippers, stump grinders, and aerial bucket trucks.
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment, which may include the use of chainsaws and various pruning tools.
  • Drive city vehicles, including 2-ton dump trucks.
  • Provide traffic control and direction, greet the public, and deliver prompt and courteous service.
  • Conduct job duties safely, in compliance with City and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, codes, policies, and training.
  • Assist Arborists in developing and maintaining normal tree health and structure.
  • Support Arborists with tree pruning and removals.
  • Perform ground worker operations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Completion of Grade 10
  • Minimum 1 year experience in the tree industry, including pruning and maintenance.
Assets
  • Possession of Air Brake (Q) endorsement on current driver’s license.
  • Possession of Emergency First Aid certification.
  • Completion of WHMIS and Chainsaw Training.
  • Completion of Ground Disturbance Level 2 training.
  • Fall Arrest Certification.
Skills required for success
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written communication, interpret work assignments, and interact effectively with the public and coworkers.
  • Ability to maintain simple records, including task cards and work records, both handwritten and through Davey TreeKeeper.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in tree maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved in the work.

  • Applicants may be tested.
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is required.
  • Must be physically capable of performing medium to heavy manual labor in various weather conditions, including heights and low lighting.
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Respiratory Protective Equipment policy, including medical monitoring, is required.
  • This position works Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, day shift.
