Are you looking for a dynamic and rewarding career opportunity? The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join our team as a Labourer II / Licensed Crew Leader in Playspaces and Sports Field Structures. In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring the safety, maintenance, and functionality of our city’s playspaces and sports fields. From approximately April to October, you will provide field-level supervision and hands-on leadership to crews, ensuring work plans are delivered effectively and efficiently. During the winter months, from approximately November to March, you will perform Labourer II duties, supporting the maintenance and operations of the assigned unit. As a Labourer II / Licensed Crew Leader, you will be responsible for supervising and leading crews in the maintenance and repair of playspaces and sports field structures, ensuring compliance with safety standards and City of Edmonton guidelines. This involves setting daily priorities, implementing work plans, assessing needs and resources, and ensuring staff are trained and working safely. You will also play a key role in playground inspections, repairs, and providing input into budget processes. In the off-season, you will perform semi-skilled manual labor activities. This position requires a proactive individual with strong leadership, technical, and communication skills to effectively manage crews, ensure quality work, and maintain positive relationships with the public and other City departments.

What will you do?

  • Provide field-level supervision and hands-on leadership to deliver approved work plans, including setting daily priorities, implementing work plans, and ensuring compliance with Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z614-14 Children's Playspaces standard
  • Assess needs and resources to perform tasks, schedule staff, and schedule maintenance repairs
  • Demonstrate and participate in the work performed by field staff, ensuring work is done following current policies and procedures
  • Investigate complaints and concerns from 311, supervisors, and other sources related to parkland tasks or activities
  • Prepare estimates of work completion and progress for various sites
  • Ensure staff have and maintain up-to-date certifications
  • Assist in the recruitment process, including screening applicants and conducting seasonal evaluations of staff and work
  • Train staff on the proper/safe use of equipment and tools, assess training needs, and provide mentorship and orientation to staff
  • Provide safety instruction to staff, ensure safety programs are followed, and assist with accident investigations and documentation
  • Maintain effective working relationships with the public, City departments, and external organizations to address on-site customer needs and park/facility operation and maintenance requirements
  • Provide input into the annual budget process, monthly budget variance reporting, and assist with the analysis and interpretation of management and financial data and reports
  • Prepare and track requisitions and purchases for site and exhibit maintenance requirements
  • Perform semi-skilled manual labor activities in Infrastructure Maintenance, including playground inspections and repairs, rehabilitation of assets, and other related duties dependent on operational and seasonal requirements
  • Inspect park furniture and perform maintenance and repair of park furniture and fixtures
  • Perform sanitation duties such as litter and debris pick-up and address on-site customer/facility user needs
  • Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, shop tools, motor vehicles, and other equipment, including trucks, skid steers, trailers, blowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, tampers, tractors, shovels, rakes, axes, and power saws
  • Regularly perform inspections on equipment and perform minor maintenance
  • Perform work in a safe and efficient manner, following policies and regulations, and participate in safety talks
  • Write up simple reports, including inspection reports, accident reports, and inventories
Qualifications

Qualifications :

  • Two (2) year diploma program in a related field or other completed educational equivalencies may be considered
  • Experience with Google, Google Docs, Google Sheets, other Google Suite Applications and SAP
  • Canadian Playground Safety Institute (CPSI) certification is required or must be able to obtain it within 12 months of employment
  • 3 years progressively responsible experience in parks construction, maintenance, and operations
  • Standard First-Aid certificate with CPR

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of city/department policies/procedures/standards and relevant legislation (WHMIS)
  • Ability to lead and develop effective work crews
  • Physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the class
  • Ability to complete task cards, work records and interpret work assignments
  • Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in tasks and construction
  • Ability to train and educate crew members in assigned functional areas
  • Ability to assist in the management of financial resources
  • Ability to inspect and approve work completed by crews and/or contractors

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold), dry, humid, dusty conditions, precipitation (rain, snow), brightness, and darkness
  • Confined spaces, noise, radiation, vibrations, and heights
  • Exposure to chemicals, blood/body fluids, infectious agents, particulates, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and animals

  • Labourer II: $31.302 (Hourly); $65,358.580 (Annually)
  • Crew Lead: $38.304 (Hourly); $79,978.750 (Annually)
