Job Description - Labourer II - Clean City Crew (52794)

The City of Edmonton is committed to creating a clean and safe environment for all Edmontonians. We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our Clean City Crew as a Labourer II. This is a physically demanding role that requires working outdoors in all weather conditions. The successful candidate will be responsible for cleaning up litter, biohazards, and other debris from the downtown core and other areas of the city.

This position involves removing biohazards, needles, garbage, and graffiti in the downtown core and other areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, be physically fit, and able to work independently and as part of a team. A valid Class 5 driver's license and a clean driving record are required. The candidate must also complete a criminal record check.

Responsibilities
  • Search for and dispose of waste including litter, biohazards (feces, vomit, needles, etc.), shopping carts, and large items (mattresses, couches, pallets, etc.)
  • Report waste details and locations via the Quick Capture app using a smartphone
  • Work around vulnerable populations, including persons experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental health issues, who may be violent or unpredictable
  • Wear PPE such as cut-resistant pants, gloves, sleeves, Tyvek suits, and respirators for protection against hazards
  • Perform routed work within designated zones and react to SAP notifications and deficiencies
  • Conduct site assessments for hazards upon arrival, following SOPs
  • Remove biohazards, needles, chemicals, and drugs safely, using proper containers
  • Ensure sites are cleaned and restored to previous condition
  • Assess sites visually for hazards in shrubs or trees
  • Unload and dispose of collected materials properly at designated collection points
  • Report any unusual or problematic situations to the crew lead
  • Collect needles throughout the city and respond promptly to citizen reports via the 311 app
Qualifications
  • Grade 10 education or equivalent

Assets
  • Experience in Edmonton's downtown core
  • Vehicle operation skills, including trucks and all-terrain vehicles
  • Proficiency with smartphones for work tracking
  • Knowledge of Edmonton's waste management and safety procedures
