Position Overview
Our Utilities department is looking for safety-minded and responsible team players who enjoy good honest work that provides a solid sense of accomplishment. We are expanding our team and need temporary full-time labourers. Labourers are the starting point where our staff receive on-the-job training, which positions them to compete for other roles such as pipefitters, equipment operators, trades workers, truck drivers, or crew supervisors. Work assignments can include working with a crew constructing water mains and water and sewer service connections, assisting in inspecting water and sewer systems, reading and repairing water meters and pumps, water pressure regulators, and fire hydrants, assisting in locating and repairing leaks in water mains and water services, assisting in sewer system cleaning, flushing, and rodding tasks, assisting in installing and repairing water valves, and assisting in responding to and troubleshooting customer concerns and emergency responses.
The successful applicant must possess:
• The physical and mental aptitude to work on a crew and learn new skills;
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair, maintenance, and pipe construction work, and some experience using a variety of hand tools;
• The ability to perform a variety of maintenance and construction-related tasks;
• The ability to carry out oral and written instructions and exercise some independent judgement;
• Skill in the operation of related tools and equipment and light or medium trucks;
• Mechanical aptitude and the physical ability to perform heavy manual work in all types of weather.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have a high school diploma and some experience in construction and maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
