Job description

Marine and Shipbuilders CMAW Local 506 is collecting expressions of interest from applicants interested in future Labourer dispatch opportunities at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards in North Vancouver.

This posting is not a current job opening, but is intended to streamline the collection of qualified applications from applicants who would otherwise apply to the union hall.

About the Role:

Labourers provide critical support to multiple trades and departments in the shipbuilding process. This includes surface prep, tool setup, safety watch, and general production assistance in a highly regulated industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fire watch and confined space attendant duties

  • Setup and maintenance of ventilation equipment

  • Using grinders to break edges, remove paint, and prep surfaces

  • Assisting mechanics with equipment protection

  • Assisting welders with setup and prep

  • Performing general duties as required and qualified

Work Conditions & Safety:

Candidates must be prepared for:

  • Working at heights

  • Respirator usage (must be clean-shaven)

  • Confined/restricted spaces

  • Loud environments, stairs, ladders, and uneven surfaces

  • Strict adherence to safety standards

Shifts & Evaluation Process:
  • All new dispatches will start on Dayshift (6:00 AM – 2:15 PM) for a brief evaluation period

  • Once qualified, candidates may be scheduled for any of the following:

    • Dayshift: 6:00 AM – 2:15 PM

    • Afternoon Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM

    • Graveyard Shift: 9:30 PM – 5:30 AM

  • Union position with Marine and Shipbuilders CMAW Local 506

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
