Job summary

Civic Service Union 52 in Edmonton seeks a Labour Relations Officer to provide expert guidance and representation to members. Reporting to the Director of Labour Relations, you will handle grievances, interpret legislation and agreements, mentor shop stewards, and lead labour relations initiatives.

You will prepare for arbitrations and participate in collective bargaining, including strategy development and negotiations.

Qualifications

Overview of Position:

The Labour Relations Officer provides expert guidance, and representation to the CSU52 membership. Reporting directly to the Director of Labour Relations, this role is responsible for member advocacy, interpreting legislation and collective agreements, managing grievances, facilitating workshops as required, and mentoring shop stewards. The Labour Relations Officer will lead and support a variety of labour relations initiatives and assigned projects. Responsibilities also include assisting, preparing for, and periodically acting as lead counsel in arbitrations and other administrative tribunal processes (e.g., Labour Relations Board and Human Rights hearings). In addition, the position plays a key role in collective bargaining, including preparation, strategy development, acting as chief spokesperson in negotiations.

What you Bring:

You are an energetic, values-driven labour relations professional with an undergraduate degree in Labour Relations or a related field, combined with a minimum of five years of relevant experience. You bring highly developed problem-solving skills, sound professional judgment, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. You can effectively prioritize competing demands, work independently, and contribute as a collaborative member of a highly effective team.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience working for or representing a trade union and a strong understanding of trade union values, principles, and purpose. You demonstrate a genuine commitment to advancing workers' rights, supporting collective action, and providing principled representation to members. Above all, you approach labour relations work with integrity, sound judgment, and a clear commitment to the union movement.

What we Offer:
  • Salary range of $4,029 biweekly ($105,156 annually) to $5,090 biweekly ($132,848 annually) (commensurate with experience)
  • 7.5-hour workday, with a compressed hours-of-work program in effect
  • Regular hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
  • Car allowance (a valid driver's license and vehicle are required)

This is a unionized position covered by the collective agreement between CSU52 and the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union, Local 1-207
