Job Summary :

The laborer is an entry-level position suitable for individuals with no prior experience in scrap metals and recycling. The ideal candidate should have a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. The laborer will assist in various daily operations such as scrap inspection, sortation, and yard maintenance as directed.

Following Gerdau's safety standards, the laborer will learn to operate mobile equipment and perform general machinery maintenance. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure safety among co-workers, truck drivers, peddlers, and contractors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :
  • Follow all Gerdau safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard.
  • Operate the fork-lift, progressing towards loader and material handler operation for loading, off-loading, and sorting scrap materials.
  • Inspect incoming scrap for quality and environmental standards, with development towards grading and purchasing scrap.
  • Apply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspector.
  • Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC).
  • Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Promote and embody Gerdau's core values.
Locations with Rail :
  • For operations with rail, responsibilities include shifting full and empty cars, operating locomotives, activating switches, coupling/uncoupling cars, and setting brakes or wheel blocks as per standard procedures.
Additional Responsibilities :
  • Ensure removal of non-conforming objects such as gas tanks (drained and removed), propane tanks, and batteries from incoming scrap vehicles.
  • Ensure radioactive materials are properly removed and quarantined from inbound/outbound scrap.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties like sweeping and garbage removal.
  • Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed.
  • Support co-workers in operational duties critical to safety, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Contribute to problem-solving efforts as needed.
