Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. is seeking a Laborer in Cornwall, Ontario.

This entry-level role involves learning scrap metals operations, safety procedures, and daily yard maintenance. You will assist in scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard upkeep while developing skills for loader and material handler tasks.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Follow all safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard.
• Operate forklift with progression toward loader and material handler duties.
• Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards.
• Apply deductions to non-conforming materials via communication with scale house or yard inspector.
• Perform daily Routine Equipment Care and maintain a clean work area.
• Provide excellent customer service and support safety for co-workers and drivers.
• Assist in non-ferrous sorting and other yard operations as directed.

Job Summary:

The laborer is an entry level position, reflecting employees with no previous knowledge or experience related to scrap metals and recycling. The laborer must have the ability to learn and a strong work ethic. The laborer will assist in several aspects of daily operations such as scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard maintenance as directed.

Under the safety standards of Gerdau the laborer will learn to operate mobile equipment and perform general maintenance duties on machinery. The laborer must have strong communication skills and use them at all times to ensure safety among co-workers, truck drivers, peddlers, and contractors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Follow all of the established Gerdau safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yardOperate the fork-lift while progressing towards loader operation and material handler operation to assist in the loading, off-loading, and sorting of scrap materialsInspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards with a progression towards grading and purchasing scrap materialApply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspectorPerform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC)Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisorMaintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly fashionProvide excellent customer servicePromote and practice the core values of Gerdau

Locations with Rail:

• For Operations that have rail; shift full and empty cars, operate locomotive, activate switches, couple and uncouple cars, and set brakes or wheel blocks as requested, in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Ensure non-conforming objects have been removed from incoming scrap vehicles such as gas tanks (drained and removed), propane tanks, and batteriesEnsure radioactive materials are removed from inbound/outbound scrap material and quarantined properlyGeneral house-keeping duties: sweep shop area and removal of garbageAssist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by non-ferrous operatorAssist co-workers in general operational duties that are essential to the yard in terms of safety, efficiency, and profitabilityProblem solving input and contributions as required
