The Role

BGC is seeking a geotechnical laboratory technician with a passion to expand their knowledge of geotechnical testing for our advanced soil and rock testing facility in Fredericton, New Brunswick (BGC Engineering | Fredericton, NB (matterport.com)).

BGC’s laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility which specializes in strength, compressibility and permeability testing of soil, and strength testing of rock. Our testing equipment includes cyclic dynamic simple shear, servo-controlled fully automated triaxial, and automated oedometer systems. The technician will support engineers with advanced rock laboratory testing and learn foundational rock mechanics.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain sample inventory
  • Maintain and operate testing equipment
  • Prepare rock samples for testing
  • Conduct advanced laboratory tests on rock and occasionally soil
  • Prepare laboratory test reports
  • Follow lab procedures for safety and quality
  • Train and mentor laboratory staff and laboratory visitors

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Technical diploma in Civil or Geological Engineering with an interest in geotechnical engineering
  • Skill and practical experience with use of power tools, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical circuits is considered an asset
  • Technical competence and experience with machine operation and repair
  • Experience with materials testing is considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills
  • Capable of utilizing basic software for machine operation and data entry
