General Purpose: The Laboratory Technician, Molecular Biology/Mycoplasmology, provides technical assistance to the Veterinary Microbiologist in the diagnostic molecular biology laboratories at the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL).

Responsibilities include: conducting routine molecular biology tests; sample receiving and preparation; DNA/RNA extraction (manual and automated); culture and identification of Mycoplasma and other bacteria; fish processing for bacterial culture, tissue collection, and histologic trimming; assisting with the development and implementation of new molecular assays; preparing reagents; establishing analytical methods with quality control; reporting results via the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); maintaining equipment and supplies; ensuring laboratory safety and cleanliness; performing general microbiology lab functions; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Three-year community college diploma related to microbiology and parasitology, plus one year of relevant experience in diagnostic molecular biology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with diagnostic molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and DNA sequencing.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, especially handling infectious specimens.
  • Experience working in ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environments and understanding of quality protocols.
  • Familiarity with laboratory chemicals and supplies.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety standards in a lab setting.

Note: A rabies titer is required. The role involves handling live bees and fish.
