Laboratory Technician III Pressure-Volume-Temperature-Compositional (PVTC)

Join us for the Laboratory Technician III Pressure-Volume-Temperature-Compositional (PVTC) role at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).

About the Role

As a Laboratory Technician III PVTC, you will analyze reservoir fluid properties to support oil and gas exploration and production. Your responsibilities include conducting high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) experiments such as PVT analysis, phase behavior studies, and compositional analysis of hydrocarbons. You will operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, ensure data accuracy, and adhere to safety and quality standards. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of petroleum fluid behavior are essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments based on scope and objectives.
  • Perform fluid characterization and PVTC analysis.
  • Design and evaluate field projects using PVTC.
  • Evaluate heavy oil phase behavior, solubility, viscosity, and density.
  • Investigate heavy oil and solvent mixtures.
  • Calibrate advanced measurement systems like nuclear magnetic resonance, gas chromatographs, and viscometers.
  • Analyze fluid properties and water cut using centrifuge methods.
  • Distill fluid samples with Dean Stark apparatus.
  • Manage sample inventory and testing priorities.
  • Prepare analytical reports.
  • Maintain laboratory operations and instrumentation, including PVT cells, spectrometers, sensors, and pumps.
  • Track consumables and order materials.
  • Prepare invoices for industry partners.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology, Power Engineering Technology, or Petroleum Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of lab research experience in petroleum engineering, geology, geophysics, or chemical engineering.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a senior technical role.
  • Over 5 years of experience in a senior petroleum engineering role is advantageous.
Skills Required
  • Experience with WHIMS, PVT analysis, reservoir fluid sampling, and HPHT equipment.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and petroleum chemistry.
  • Laboratory safety protocols and analytical software proficiency.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under high pressure, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to new methods.
