Job Description

Please note that this is an entry-level position and does not include relocation support for candidates moving to the London area. Public transit options are limited for those without vehicles. The role requires availability to work shifts on a rotating schedule (Days, Evenings, & Weekends).

  1. Duties may include sample reception, identification, preparation, dilutions, setting up analytical batches, analysis, batch Quality Control, and use of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  2. Read plates and test tubes to determine the presence or absence of organisms.
  3. Prepare media and broth for pathogen testing as required.
  4. Experience in membrane filtration, pour plate, and other microbiological techniques is preferred.
  5. Process samples, prepare media and reagents using aseptic techniques.
  6. Ensure samples are cataloged and stored efficiently for easy retrieval.
  7. Calibrate and set up laboratory equipment prior to analysis and maintain calibration records.
  8. Interpret and evaluate test results.
  9. Monitor equipment maintenance and laboratory supplies.
  10. Follow all health, safety, and environmental policies of the company.
  11. Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  12. Adhere to all Quality system protocols and report discrepancies to the Supervisor.
  13. Assist in other areas of the Environmental Services laboratory as needed.
  14. Coordinate and participate in special or ad hoc projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in a Science-related field (Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology) or equivalent experience/training.
  2. Ability to perform routine bench and instrumental analysis, understanding assay methods.
  3. Good hand/eye coordination for handling samples and lab equipment.
  4. Comfortable working with numerals and monitoring data on a computer screen.
  5. Ability to read, understand, and follow work instructions accurately and safely.
  6. Strong analytical skills.
  7. Working knowledge of LIMS is an asset.
  8. Ability to work under pressure during high workloads, balancing quality and volume.
  9. Proven time management skills and attention to detail.
  10. Proficiency in computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  11. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  12. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  13. Experience in an ISO 17025 accredited lab is an asset.
  14. Extended hours and shift work may be required.
  15. Compliance with health & safety, integrity, and professional conduct policies.
