Job Title: Laboratory Technician

General Description Of The Role

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting laboratory day-to-day testing, and preparing/performing product sensory analysis, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely and accurately.

Key Responsibilities And Activities

Given the nature of the Company’s business and the marketplace, the business and/or jobs will evolve and change over time. Accordingly, the Company may add to or remove from the duties and responsibilities set out below as circumstances change. Current duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician include:

  • Performs all laboratory chemical testing as required, including colour, turbidity, alcohol content, pH, and GC
  • Performs stability & microbiological testing as required, including plating, incubation, and disposal of Petrifilms
  • Prepares and tastes sensory samples multiple times a day
  • Records all findings accurately in the Laboratory Notebook and on associated forms
  • Keeps the laboratory tidy and clean
  • Conducts laboratory inventory counts and advises Quality Supervisor when supplies are running low
  • Performs environmental monitoring swabbing (Allergen and ATP)
  • Ensures daily and weekly calibrations are conducted
  • Performs routine QC tasks as required (i.e., line checks, pre-op inspections, product inspections, etc.)
  • Adheres to good housekeeping, safety, environmental, Food Safety, and Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMP) guidelines
  • Complies with all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act as well as all Forty Creek Distillery policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the Quality Supervisor or Quality Manager

  • Canadian Supply Chain employees

Experience Required

  • 1+ years of experience of working in a laboratory preferred but recent graduates from a science program will be considered
  • Previous experience working with Consumer-Packaged Goods/Alcoholic Beverage Industry and/or in Quality Control would be an asset

Education / Professional Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Science, preferably Chemistry, Food Science, or Biotechnology

Technical:

  • Knowledge of sampling techniques
  • Good analytical and diagnostic skills
  • Sound knowledge of the methodology used in the quantitative and qualitative analyses of chemicals, including of whisky, vodka, liqueurs, other spirits, and raw materials
  • Sound knowledge of the operation of equipment used for Laboratory analyses

Other Requirements

  • General work hours will be 7:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Work outside these hours will be required on occasion, including early starts, later finishes, and some Saturdays as assigned.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 kilograms
  • Frequent sitting, standing, climbing and bending may be required
  • Exposure to heat, dust, irritable odours, and strong chemicals may occur
